Captain Amarinder Singh is an Indian politician and military historian serving as the 15th and current Chief Minister of Punjab. He was also elected to the Legislative Assembly of Patiala by the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, the State Division of the Indian National Congress. He also served as Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002–2007. His father was the last Maharaja of the state of Patiala. He has also served from 1963 to 1966 in the Indian Army. In 1980, he won a seat in the Lok Sabha for the first time. He presently serves as the chairman of the Punjab Urdu Academy.

Maharaja Yadavindra Singh is the father and Maharani Mohinder Kaur is the mother of Captain. He studied the Welham Boys’ School and Lawrence School Sanawar before going to The Doon School, Dehradun. He has one son, Raninder Singh, and one daughter, Jai Inder Kaur, who is married to Gurpal Singh Sandhu, a Delhi-based businessman. Preneet Kaur is his wife. She served as a Member of Parliament and was Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2009 to 2014.

Heminder Kaur is his elder sister and she is married to former Foreign Minister K. Natwar Singh. He is also related to Shiromani Akali Dal and former IPS Officer Simranjit Singh Mann.


Army career:

Singh served in the Indian Army from June 1963 to December 1966 after graduating from the National Defense Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He was commissioned into the Sikh Regiment. From December 1964, he served as aide-de-camp to General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Command, Lieutenant General Harbaksh Singh. He fought in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965.

Political Career:

Amarinder Singh was introduced to Congress by his school friend and Gandhi Scion Rajiv Gandhi. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980. In 1984, he resigned from the Parliament as well as the Congress to condemn the conduct of the Army during Operation Blue Star. He later entered the Shiromani Akali Dal and was elected to the Punjab state legislature by the Talwandi Sabo Assembly. He was Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Development, and Panchayats in the State Government.


Amarinder Singh broke away from Shiromani Akali Dal in 1992 and founded a splinter group called Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic). This party merged with the Congress in 1998 after its overwhelming defeat in the subsequent election of Vidhan Sabha. Amarinder himself was defeated by Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra of Patiala by a considerable margin of votes. Amarinder served as chairman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee from 1999 to 2002 and from 2010 to 2013. From 2002 to 2007, he was Chief Minister of Punjab.

Amarinder was expelled by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Special Committee in September 2008 due to irregularities in land-related transactions. In 2010, the Supreme Court of India ruled that his dismissal was unconstitutional. He was appointed Chair of the Punjab Congress Campaign Committee and has been a Permanent Invitee to the Congress Working Committee since 2013. He beat senior BJP member Arun Jaitley of Amritsar by a huge margin in the 2014 general election. Over five years, he was a member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, representing Patiala (Urban) and Samana and Talwandi Sabo once each. On 27 November 2015, Amarinder Singh was named President of the Punjab Congress in the run-up to the Punjab elections scheduled for 2017.

He has also written books on war and Sikh history, including A Ridge Too High, Lest We Forget, The Last Sunset: Rise and Fall of Lahore Durbar, and The Sikhs in Britain: 150 Years of Photographs. Among his most recent articles are Honor and Fidelity: the 1914-1918 Indian Military Contribution to the Great War, published in Chandigarh on 6 December 2014, and The Monsoon War: Young Officers Reminisce – 1965 India-Pakistan War – which includes his memoirs of the Indo-Pak war of 1965.
