Anil Kumble (born October 17, 1970) is an Indian cricket coach, skipper, former cricketer, and commentator who spent 18 years playing Tests and ODIs. He is a right-arm leg spin (leg break googly) bowler who is widely considered as one of the finest bowlers in test cricket history. In Test cricket, he has 619 wickets and is the third-highest wicket-taker of all time (as of 2020, behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne). Kumble joined England’s Jim Laker as the only other player to dismiss all ten batsmen in a Test match innings in 1999 when playing against Pakistan. Kumble, unlike his contemporaries, was not a big ball turner, relying instead on pace, bounce, and accuracy. “Apple” and “Jumbo” were his nicknames. In 1993, Kumble was named Indian Cricketer of the Year, and three years later, he was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year.

Kumble was born in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and grew up admiring players such as B. S. Chandrasekhar before going on to become a full-fledged cricketer. At the age of 19, he represented Karnataka on his first-class debut. Soon after, he was selected for the Austral-Asia Cup in 1990, and later that year, he made his Test debut against England. Since then, he has played in over 132 Test matches for India, and he has been instrumental in many of the team’s successes. During the early 1990s, Kumble became a regular member of the ODI side and had some of the best performances of his career, including his six for 12 (six wickets for 12 runs) against the West Indies. He was picked for the World Cup in 1996 and emerged as the tournament’s most successful bowler, playing seven matches and capturing 15 wickets at an average of 18.73.

On November 30, 1989, Kumble made his first-class debut for Karnataka against Hyderabad, collecting four wickets and claiming two catches. After that, he was selected for India Under-19s against Pakistan Under-19s, where he scored 113 in the first test and 76 in the second. On April 25, 1990, he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Sharjah during the Austral-Asia Cup. In the series against Pakistan, he played one more game and took two wickets. In the same year, India toured England for a three-test series, and he made his Test debut. It was the second test of the series, and he took three wickets in the first innings, allowing 105 runs, before going wicket-less in the second innings of the match, which ended in a draw. He didn’t appear in a Test match until 1992. Kumble scored 13/138 for Rest of India versus Delhi in the Irani Trophy, ensuring the latter’s triumph. This performance helped him secure a spot on India’s tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe. He proved himself as a powerful spinner during the 1992 Indian tour of South Africa, taking eight wickets in the second Test. In the four-test series, he took 18 wickets at an average of 25.94 and an economy rate of 1.84. When England visited India later that year, Kumble got 21 wickets in three Tests at an average of 19.8.

Kumble had a particularly strong year in 1996, with 61 ODI wickets at an average of 20.24. With 90 wickets at an average of 24.14 in Tests and ODIs combined, he was the greatest wicket-taker in the calendar year. Kumble was included to the Indian World Cup squad in 1996. He participated in each of India’s seven matches. With 15 wickets at an average of 18.73, Kumble was the tournament’s leading wicket-taker. India’s first match was against Kenya, when Kumble got three wickets for 28 runs, allowing India to restrict Kenya to 199/6 in 50 overs.
Kumble’s maiden Test century came on August 10th of that year, when he hit an unbeaten 110 against England at the Oval to help his team finish with 664 runs. He needed 118 Tests to earn his first Test century, breaking Chaminda Vaas’ 96-match record. In the three-Test series, it was also the only century by an Indian. He is the only Test cricketer in history to take all ten wickets in an innings while also scoring a Test century.

He was appointed as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team by the BCCI on June 24, 2016, for a one-year term, but left due to “unacceptable differences” with the captain, Virat Kohli, as he indicated. After the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Anil Kumble’s one-year mandate came to a conclusion. On June 12, 2017, COA president Vinod Rai stated that Anil Kumble will continue as India Cricket Team coach for the forthcoming West Indies tour of India. After a recent setback in the ICC Champions Trophy Final 2017 against Pakistan, he stood down as the Indian Cricket Team’s head coach on June 20, 2017, after less than a year in the position.

Kumble made a statement on Twitter on June 20, 2017 — “I am humbled by the CAC’s trust in me, as seen by their decision to keep me as Head Coach. The Captain, the entire team, coaches, and support staff deserve recognition for the last year’s accomplishments. Following this, the BCCI informed me for the first time yesterday that the Captain had misgivings about my’style’ and whether or not I should continue as Head Coach. I was taken aback since I have always valued the Captain-Coach relationship. Despite the BCCI’s best efforts to settle the disputes between the Captain and myself, it was clear that the partnership was unsustainable, and I believe it is in my best interests for me to move on. The main characteristics I bring to the table are professionalism, discipline, commitment, honesty, complimentary abilities, and a variety of perspectives. For the collaboration to be successful, these must be appreciated. The Coach’s function, in my opinion, is similar to that of a “holding a mirror” to encourage self-improvement in the team’s best interests.
