Freud’s Last Session will tell the story of the unlikely meeting between the famous psychoanalyst and atheist Sigmund Freud (of Oedipus Complex, superego, and id fame) and the Christian author C.S. Lewis, who is perhaps best known for writing The Chronicles of Narnia. Freud’s Last Session will tell the story of the unlikely intersection of their lives. The improbable but significant encounter between the two people will be at the center of the story told in the movie, which takes place shortly before the start of World War Two. The film will show the two of them discussing whether or not God exists.

The film is not based on an actual meeting between the two opposing parties but on an Off-Broadway play that imagines a potential crossing between the two groups’ divergent worldviews. The forthcoming movie will also go into the personal lives of Lewis and Freud, explicitly focusing on Freud’s connection with his daughter Anna and Lewis’ relationship with the mother of his closest friend.

In the newly released picture, the two main characters stand close to one another in what seems to be Freud’s office. The distinctive thick-rimmed spectacles, waistcoat, and pocket watch chain that Freud favored are all worn by Hopkins. Goode is shown to be a younger version of Lewis. They caress a box while standing on opposite sides of a desk in the middle of the room. What is inside the box is still unclear, but the picture indicates some connection between the seemingly unrelated things.

Matthew Brown, who most recently collaborated on The Man Who Knew Infinity, will helm the future project as the film’s director. Mark St. Germain penned the screenplay for the movie, which was adapted from his play of the same name. The film also stars Jodi Balfour, Stephen Campbell Moore, Jeremy Northam, Orla Brady, and Goode and Hopkins. Sony Pictures Classics has successfully acquired the rights to distribute the movie in North America. The film does not yet have a scheduled release date.
