Ramkishen Yadav (Real Name of Baba Ramdev) was born on 25 December 1965 in the village of Said Alipur, Mahendragarh, East Punjab, (now Haryana), India. His dad, Ram Nivas Yadav, was a farmer. He wasn’t very talkative in his childhood. He never quarreled, and he was very pleased. He received his primary education in his hometown and studied till the 8th grade, after which he joined Gurukul to study Sanskrit and Yoga.

He was a student of Acharya Baldev Ji in Gurukul Kalwa, and he learned yoga from Guru Karanvir and Arya Samaji. He used to study second-hand books, and he was always the first in the class. He would keep the books so clean that he could sell them at a price higher than the market price. In his childhood, he suffered a paralytic attack on the left side of his body. He credits yoga for a miraculous recovery.


Ramkishen Yadav’s father’s name is Ram Niwas Yadav and his mother’s name is Gulabo Devi. He has a brother named Ram Bharat. He is the CEO of Patanjali Ayurveda Ltd.


After an ascetic lifestyle, Ramdev took ‘Sanyasi Diksha’ and took the name of Swami Ramdev from Swami Shankar Dev Ji. While living in Kalwa Gurukul in Jind, Haryana, he began giving the villagers free yoga classes. Later on, he moved to Haridwar, Uttarakhand. In Haridwar, he acknowledged Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya and practiced meditation and self-discipline. He laid the foundation of the Divya Yog Mandir Trust in 1995. In 2003, Aastha TV began featuring him in his morning yoga slot.

Gradually, he started to be widely known. Many celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Shilpa Shetty also taught him yoga.

He has made yoga popular in other countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, etc. He also addressed a major convention of Muslim clerics in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh. In 2006, the then UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, was invited to give a lecture on poverty alleviation at the United Nations Conference. The same year, he established the “Patanjali Yogpeeth” in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, which is considered the world’s largest center for Ayurveda and Yoga, with a capacity of around 6000 people.

Over a long period of time, he became the face of Patanjali Ayurveda Ltd., a company he founded with his colleague, Acharya Balkrishna. Under their leadership, Patanjali Ayurveda was one of India’s largest fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs).

(g) During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ayurvedic medicine “Coronil;” was launched, claiming that it would cure patients infected with the virus. Following the launch of the medicine in June 2020, the central government and the government of Uttarakhand distanced themselves from Baba’s claim. The AYUSH Ministry also distanced itself and questioned the therapeutic effects of the medicinal product. Subsequently, FIR was lodged in Jaipur against Ramdev and four others for misleading claims to cure COVID-19 following clinical trials.
