Barbara Hershey is an American actriz, best known for her film roles like ‘A killing in a small town’ and ‘The portrait of a woman.’ For the latter, she was nominated for the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ with the Academy Award. Born and raised in California, Barbara wanted to become a young actress. During her high school studies, she attended drama classes. She made her acting debut at the age of 17 when she played a minor role in the “Gidget” series. She has appeared in many movies over the next two decades and is mainly known for her role in successful movies such as ‘Heaven with a gun’ and ‘Boxcar Bertha.’ In the 1980s, she was appreciated critically by movies like “Hannah and Her Sisters,” “A World Apart” and “The Portrait of a Lady.” She also took on some iconic TV roles throughout her career. In the lists for ‘the best American actresses of all time,’ she was often mentioned.

Barbara Lynn Herzstein was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on February 5, 1948. Her father Arnold Nathan Herzstein was a columnist and very rich. The paternal grandparents of Barbara had emigrated from Russia and Hungary to the United States.

Barbara was raised in a bungalow near the Hollywood Hills, the smallest of three children in the family. As a child, Barbara was influenced by the brilliance and glamour of the American movie industry. At a very young age, Barbara had made up her mind to become an actress.

Barbara, however, was a shy child lacking self-confidence. She would so much keep her thoughts to herself that she thought many of her classmates were deaf in school.

But because of her desire to become an actress, she overcame her deficiencies. While in high school, she took drama classes. She was also a ‘A’ graduate student, but she did not want to do anything other than act.

She was a great actor and entered the good books of her high school drama teacher. Her teacher introduced her to an agent when she was 17 years old. Then Barbara played a role in the ‘Gidget’ TV series. Barbara’s acting career began with that. In 1965, Barbara appeared in three episodes of her acting debut ‘Gidget.’ Her role in the series was appreciated and finally she played another role in the 1966 series ‘The Monroes.’ ‘The Monroes’ was created by Milt Rosen and was a short-lived series. While Barbara admitted that her role in ‘The Monroes’ helped her career, she was frustrated with her design. ‘Barbara Hershey’ has now been adopted as her stage name.

She appeared in more series in the next few years, like ‘Daniel Boone’ and ‘Run for your life.’ She made her film debut in 1968 in the romantic comedy film ‘With Six You Get Eggroll’ as Stacey Iverson.

In 1969, she took one of the leading positions in the American film ‘Heaven with a Gun.’ She appeared in the controversial film ‘Last Summer’ in the same year. She played Sandy in the movie, a young girl who has convinced two men to rape another girl. The film was a crucial success and for the first time in her career, Barbara received critical acclaim.

She appeared in 1970 in another contentious film called “The Baby Maker,” a film about the concept of substitution. Although the critic and the audience severely criticised the film, Barbara’s performance was appreciated. Barbara was said to be much more than a “pretty face.”

In the 1972 film ‘Boxcar Bertha’ she performed again with praise. The film marked the beginning of the Hollywood film by Martin Scorsese, a legendary director. The film was discussed to show excessive violence, which later became an element of signature in the films of Martin Scorsese.

Barbara achieved significant success in Hollywood for the next few years. She has appeared in many successful features, such as The Last Hard Men, The Stunt Man, The Entity and Diamonds. She was cast in some Hollywood big-budget movies in the 1970s. Despite a worthy performance, she was still unable to win major film awards.

In 1986, prominent critics finally recognised Barbara’s acting skills with the release of the movie ‘Hannah and Her Sisters,’ directed by Woody Allen. The comedy film tells the storey of a family when their members experience difficulties in their lifetime before they meet for a Thanksgiving dinner. Barbara won two nominations for her role in the film as Lee. She was first nominated for the ‘BAFTA Awards,’ then for the ‘National Film Critics Society Award.’

In 1987, she succeeded in playing Ruth in the film ‘Shy People.’ The family drama film was a big success during ‘Cannes Film Festival’ and won the Barbara Award for Best Actress at the ‘Cannes Film Festival.’

She continued her success the following year at the Cannes Film Festival by winning the second ‘Best Actress Award.’ This time, she was honoured with a movie titled ‘A World Apart.’
