Actor and director Barkhad Abdi hails from Somalia and is best known for his role as Tom Hanks’ sidekick in the multi-Oscar-nominated biographical drama ‘Captain Phillips.’ Director Paul Greengrass (of the “Jason Bourne” series fame) put him in the film as the frightening head of a Somali pirate band as a non-professional actor. He’d never done any acting before, but he had dabbled with bad music videos and short films as a hobbyist filmmaker.

Abdi has appeared in prominent Hollywood projects like “Eye in the Sky,” “Blade Runner 2049,” and “The Pirates of Somalia” after his initial part was a critical and economic triumph. For now, he just wants to keep performing and improve his skills while seeing how far he can get in the business, says the unassuming and grounded Hollywood newcomer with the distinctive skeletal build and protruding incisors. A first-generation Somali immigrant, Abdi was forced to flee his native Somalia when he was just a tiny child because of the country’s civil conflict. ‘Adeso,’ an African humanitarian NGO created by Somali environmentalist Fatima Jibrell, designated him as an ambassador in 2013.

Abdi Barkhad was born in Mogadishu, Somalia on April 10, 1985, into a Majeerteen family in the Banaadir coastal region. His father was a police officer and his mother was a housewife. He was the second of four children, and he had two brothers and a sister as growing-up companions in his life.

When Abdi was 6, his father, a school teacher, chose to travel to Yemen to escape the escalating civil conflict in Somalia with his family. I fled Somalia when I was seven years old yet I saw an entire year of conflict,” said this man. It’s been reported that the actor had mixed feelings about his time in Somalia.

The United States granted him and his family asylum as legitimate refugees. It was in 1999 that they made the decision to relocate to Minneapolis, Minnesota. The city had the largest Somali population in North America, with a strong Somali community.

Young Abdi had a difficult time adjusting to life in the United States. Football (soccer) was something he did in Yemen, but couldn’t find it in the US, so he gave it up. Rather, to make friends, he taught himself how to play basketball. The ‘Minnesota State University Moorhead’ was his next stop.

Abdi was a limo driver for a relative’s chauffeur firm and worked at his brother’s mobile phone shop in a Minneapolis mall. In addition, he had a side gig as a DJ. I used to DJ pool parties in Minneapolis, but I never went swimming there.” He once confessed. As a Minneapolis-based limousine driver, Abdi responded to an open casting call for ‘Captain Phillips’ (2013), directed by Oscar-nominated director Paul Greengrass, who was looking for actors to play the desperate Somali kidnappers involved in the 2009 ‘Maersk Alabama’ ship-hijacking incident, during which merchant mariner Captain Richard Phillips was held hostage in the Guardafui Channel.

With three of his close friends from the same Minneapolis area, Abdi jumped at the chance to work with “the Forrest Gump guy.” As a result, they were employed together and became crucial to the film’s success, earning it six Oscar nominations. According to the casting director, the quartet was picked because they were “the chosen ones, the anointed group that stuck out.”

He was nominated for ‘Best Actor In A Supporting Role’ at the 2014 ‘Golden Globes,’ among fellow candidates Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, Michael Fassbender, and Daniel Brühl, in addition to being named an ‘Oscar and Screen Actors Guild Award winner for his role in ‘Captain Phillips.’ The film earned him a ‘BAFTA’ nomination and a ‘BAFTA’ win.

Because he worked on Greengrass’ film for free, Abdi had to go back to working at his brother’s shop after being paid just $65,000 for his time and talent. This was in part due to his being fired from his work as a TV show script reader in January of that year. A big-banner role in the Judd Apatow and Amy Schumer comedy ‘Trainwreck,’ which he was set to play in 2015, was cut from his contract the same year.

The film’s co-writer was none other than Jay Bahadur. During the weeks preceding the Maersk Alabama hijacking, Abdi served as a local Somali agent and interpreter for a Canadian freelance journalist.

In 2017, he appeared in the films ‘Good Time,’ with Robert Pattinson, and ‘Extortion,’ with Jennifer Lawrence. A few months later, in October 2017, he co-starred alongside Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling in Denis Villeneuve’s version of “Blade Runner 2049,” which was nominated for an Oscar. The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir, featuring Indian actor Dhanush, was his most recent major motion picture.

On Hulu, he will star in the second season of Stephen King horror–fantasy Castle Rock as a regular cast member. ‘Beneath a Sea of Lights’ and ‘Tyson’s Run,’ both of which are in post-production, are two of his next projects. He made numerous media appearances after receiving acclaim and nominations for his portrayal of real-life pirate Abduwali Muse, and in an interview with ‘The Los Angeles Times,’ Somali revealed his plans to relocate permanently in Los Angeles in an attempt at establishing a career in the entertainment industry for himself there. There is more to me than just a Somali persona. I see myself as an actor, and if the role fits me and the plot appeals to me, I’ll take it,” he explained. As of now, he splits his time between Cedar-Riverside, Minnesota, and Los Angeles, California.
