Biplab Kumar Deb is an Indian politician and Chief Minister of Tripura. Since 7 January 2016, he has been the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tripura.

Biplab Kumar Deb Biography:

Biplab Deb was born on 25 November 1971 in the village of Rajdhar Nagar, Udaipur, Gomati District, Tripura. His parents had migrated to India as refugees from Chandpur District, Bangladesh during the liberation war in 1971 before his birth. His father has been a resident of India since 27 June 1967. He spent his childhood and school days in Tripura, graduating from Tripura University, before heading to New Delhi to join the RSS. He later returned to Tripura after an absence of 15 years.

Political Career:

Biplab Deb was elected President of the BJP State Unit of Tripura in January 2017 to replace Sudhndra Dasgupta, BJP’s longest-serving state president. He started his political career by campaigning for the 2018 state election. He started his campaign with the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, which was believed to be the base of the then ruling CPI(M).

On 8 August 2017 Biplab Deb helped to defect the MLAs of the Indian National Congress led by Sudip Roy Barman to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He led the local BJP in the 2018 elections to the Legislative Assembly, trying to win office after 25 years of the Left Front. He contested the election from Banamalipur Constituency in Agartala and won by a margin of 9,549 votes, which was held by Indian National Congress MLA Gopal Roy. Deb led the Tripura election campaign and, after 25 years, effectively defeated the Left Front by winning 44 seats with his party, Tripura’s Indigenous Peoples Front, out of 60 possible seats in Tripura.

Biplab Deb campaigned on the topic of youth employment opportunities, which he vowed to boost if elected Chief Minister of Tripura. He also promised the employees of Tripura that he would implement the 7th Pay Commission once get elected. Deb brought together key BJP ministers from across India to campaign for the Tripura Party.

Controversy:

In April 2018, Deb stirred up national controversy by suggesting that the Internet and satellite had existed since the Mahabharata period. He also made controversial remarks on the Civil Service Examination, stating that only civil engineers should sit for civil service exams. He also argued that international beauty pageants were a farce, claiming that the decision to award Miss World and Miss Universe titles to Indian women for five years in a row was market-driven rather than focused on the attractiveness of the contestants while challenging the reasoning behind the awarding of Diana Hayden to Miss World pageant.
