Odenkirk grew up in Naperville, Illinois, after being born in Berwyn, Illinois. Walter and Barbara Odenkirk are Catholics of Irish and German origin and the parents of seven children. Walter worked in the printing industry while Barbara worked in the family business. His father’s alcoholism was a contributing factor in his mother’s divorce, which inspired Bob’s resolve to abstain from alcohol as much as possible.
According to him, his father is “distant, messed-up, and not around.” Later on, Odenkirk would state that he grew up in “Hating” Naperville because it “felt like a dead end, like Nowheresville,” according to the author. I couldn’t wait to be settled in a metropolis and be surrounded by people who were involved in intriguing endeavors.” Walter Odenkirk passed away in 1986 due to bone cancer.
Bill Odenkirk, Odenkirk’s younger brother, is a comedian and writer. At the age of 16, Odenkirk graduated from Naperville North High School. He had “become bored of high school,” and because he had earned enough credits, he was allowed to leave while still a junior. Given his age and fear of being socially uncomfortable at any college, he chose to attend the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, rather than a more prestigious institution.
After a year, he transferred to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, where he “honed his sketch-writing and performance skills with live shows on both colleges radio stations.” After a year, he graduated and went on to study at Marquette University. He began his comic writing career as a radio DJ for WIDB, the local non-broadcast campus station at Southern Illinois University.
At WIDB, he established The Prime Time Special, a late-night radio comedy show that ran from midnight to 4 a.m. on weekdays. Greg Weindorf and Matt Helser, two additional rising stars, were his co-stars on the project. Having completed three years of education, Odenkirk found himself three credits short of graduation when he decided to try his hand at writing and improv in Chicago.
He completed his courses at Columbia College Chicago and graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree. After initially studying with Del Close, Odenkirk attended the Players Workshop, where he met Robert Smigel.
The two formed a friendship that would last for years and eventually lead to Odenkirk’s appearance on Saturday Night Live. He also appeared at the Improv Olympic, where he shared the stage with prominent comedians Chris Farley and Tim Meadows. When Odenkirk was fourteen years old, he paid a visit to Chicago’s Second City Theater.
He cited Monty Python’s Flying Circus as his most significant comic inspiration, especially because of its combination of cerebral humor with verbal slapstick, which Odenkirk described as “laugh-out-loud” humor. In addition to Steve Dahl, SCTV’s Let’s Get Small with Steve Martin, Woody Allen’s The Credibility Gap, and Bob and Ray, other influences were Bob and Ray and radio personality Steve Dahl.
Seth Rogen is most known for his portrayal of unscrupulous lawyer Saul Goodman on the AMC criminal drama series Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul. For this performance, he was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He is also well-known for his role as co-creator and star of the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David, which he co-created with fellow comic and buddy David Cross.
For his work on Saturday Night Live and The Ben Stiller Show, which aired from the late 1980s through the early 1990s, Odenkirk was honored with two Emmy Awards: one in 1989 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series and the other in 1993 for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. In addition, he has written for Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Get a Life, and he has appeared in The Larry Sanders Show in a recurrent role as Agent Stevie Grant.
Odenkirk found the comic duo Tim & Eric in the early 2000s and went on to create their television programs Tom Goes to the Mayor and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! in the early 2000s. He has directed three films: Melvin Goes to Dinner (2003), Let’s Go to Prison (2006), and The Brothers Solomon (2007). (2007). Aside from that, he was an executive producer of the sketch comedy show The Birthday Boys, which he developed with the group after watching their work at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles.
In 2015, he and David Cross, along with the rest of the Mr. Show ensemble, returned for the Netflix original series W/ Bob & David. In 2017, Odenkirk co-wrote, produced, and starred in the Netflix original film Girlfriend’s Day, which was launched on the streaming service.
Several high-profile projects followed the success of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, including Nebraska (directed by Alexander Payne), Fargo (written and created by Noah Hawley), Steven Spielberg’s The Post (directed by Steven Spielberg), Disney/Incredibles Pixar’s 2 (written and directed by Brad Bird), and Little Women (written and directed by Greta Gerwig).
