They brought a song they had written and recorded to a record label, who liked it but insisted that it be performed by one of their own performers. “We were so broke and struggling,” Mars remembered, “that we had to do what we had to do, therefore we ended up selling the song.” Mars was initially upset, but it turned out to be an eye-opening event.
