After 51 years as lead pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, Charles Frazier Stanley is now Pastor Emeritus. He is the creator and head of In Touch Ministries, which broadcasts his sermons on television. From 1984 to 1986, he served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention for two one-year terms.
Stanley was born on 25 September 1932 in Dry Fork, Virginia, in the United States, on September 25, 1932. Nine months later, his father, also called Charles, died. Stanley grew up in the little town of Dry Fork, just outside of Danville. He became a born-again Christian at the age of 12 and began his life’s work in Christian evangelism at the age of 14.
Stanley graduated from the University of Richmond with a bachelor’s degree and from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas with a master’s degree. Luther Rice Seminary in Florida awarded him a Master of Theology and a Doctor of Ministry degree.
The Southern Baptist Convention had a little uproar in 2000 when Stanley divorced his wife, Anna, after several years of separation. The situation was compounded by allegations that Stanley had stated that if he divorced, he would quit as pastor. He didn’t think his separation would lead to divorce at the moment. When it did, though, his church members overwhelmingly chose to maintain him as pastor. Stanley will be permitted to maintain his position at First Baptist Atlanta as long as he does not remarry, according to the church’s statutes.
Andy Stanley, Stanley’s son, is the pastor of North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, which is close by. The Southern Baptist Convention chose Charles Stanley as its president in 1985. In 2005, Stanley asked Lisa Ryan to co-host “Bring It Home,” a question-and-answer segment that ran following the sermon and advertising. The Q&A part was designed to assist the audience better understand the sermon’s subject by using questions that a typical listener may ask. In late 2006, the section was phased out and replaced with Stanley alone. Stanley began teaching his “30 Life Principles” in the concluding portion of the “In Touch” TV and radio shows in early 2007. Stanley remarked in 2009, “I started applying the lessons from that book to my work as a pastor, and they worked! …… I’ve read Think and Grow Rich every year for years to remind myself that God’s truth is not limited to one profession. It may be used for a variety of tasks and ministries.”
Stanley is a photographer in addition to his job in Christian outreach. Much of his photography may be found in the ministry’s In Touch magazine, as well as other printed products like the In Touch wall and desk calendars.
In 2017, Stanley nominated Anthony George as the senior pastor of First Baptist Church, with the intention of succeeding him at some time in the future. Stanley announced his resignation as senior pastor and move to pastor emeritus on September 13, 2020.
