National Basketball Association (NBA) team Charlotte Hornets, a professional basketball club based out of Charlotte, North Carolina (NBA). In 2004, the Bobcats became the NBA’s 30th franchise when they were renamed the Orlando Magic. He became the first African-American majority owner of a franchise in a major professional sports league in the United States when the Bobcats were founded by Robert L.

Johnson, an American media magnate. The Bobcats, although having young, skilled players like Rookie of the Year Emeka Okafor and forward Gerald Wallace, were not an immediate success in the NBA. Each of the team’s first five seasons saw them finish with a losing record and in last or second-to-last place in its division.

Former NBA star and North Carolina native Michael Jordan bought a minority stake in the team in 2006, and he hired Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown in 2008 to try to turn things around for the franchise. Jordan stepped down as general manager and majority owner of the Bobcats in 2010.

This was Charlotte’s first playoff appearance since the team’s inaugural winning season in 2009–10. After just 28 games, Brown decided to leave the Bobcats after their brief run of success in 2010–11. The squad recorded an NBA-record-low winning % of.106 in the lockout-shortened 2011–12 season, losing all but seven of its 66 games. In the following season, the Bobcats regrouped and returned to the postseason with a winning record and a playoff berth.

(The hornet’s nest of American rebels in Charlotte during the American Revolution inspired the team’s moniker.) In 2015–16, the Hornets returned to the postseason but were eliminated in the first round once more. However, the Hornets failed to make the playoffs in any of the following five seasons, despite playing in a poor division.

Other initiatives of Johnson’s include Our Stories Films, which he co-founded in 2006 alongside Harvey and Bob Weinstein, producers of films. Family-friendly films targeting African American audiences were produced by the business.
