Stapleton has over 170 songwriting and co-writing credits as of 2018. He co-wrote six number-one country songs, including Kenny Chesney’s “Never Wanted Nothing More,” Josh Turner’s “Your Guy,” George Strait’s “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright,” and Luke Bryan’s “Drink a Beer,” which reached number one for five weeks.
His songs have been included on albums by Adele, Brad Paisley, and Dierks Bentley, among others. Vince Gill, Peter Frampton, Sheryl Crow, and Ed Sheeran are among the artists with whom he has collaborated. Five Grammy Awards, seven Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, and ten Country Music Association (CMA) Awards have all been bestowed upon Stapleton.
Stapleton sang lead in two bands before beginning to record as a solo artist, including The SteelDrivers and The Jompson Brothers, a bluegrass ensemble from 2008 to 2010. Following that, he released his solo debut, Traveller (2015), a critically acclaimed studio album that debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In May 2017, he released his second studio album, From A Room: Volume 1, which won him a second CMA Award for Album of the Year and a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. Volume 2 of From A Room was published in December 2017.
Starting Over, Stapleton’s fourth studio album was released on November 13, 2020. The title track was released as the album’s first single. His fourth album cemented his place in the top ten country singer song writers of all time.
Stapleton was born in Lexington, Kentucky, in the United States. Carol J. (Mace) Stapleton, his mother, worked at the local health department, and his father, Herbert Joseph Stapleton, Jr. (1946–2013), was a coal miner. He comes from a coal-mining background. He has a younger sister, Melanie Brooke, and an older brother, Herbert Joseph III. Stapleton grew up in Staffordsville, Kentucky, a small town just outside of Paintsville that sits between the city and the Paintsville Lake.
He graduated from Johnson Central High School, where he was the salutatorian and played football. He then went to Vanderbilt University, where he studied engineering for a year before dropping out. For a few months in 1999, Stapleton led a Travis Tritt tribute band in his hometown of Staffordsville, Kentucky, and he also says that listening to Travis Tritt helps him reconnect with his roots.
Stapleton relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2001 to pursue a career in music. He signed with the publishing house Sea Gayle Music as a songwriter shortly after relocating to Nashville. In 2007, he joined the bluegrass band The Steeldrivers as the frontman. Before Stapleton left in 2010, they had two hit singles, both of which reached number two on the bluegrass chart.
Stapleton sang, Greg McKee played guitar, J.T. Cure played bass, and Bard McNamee played drums for the band. They toured regionally until 2013, opening for the Zac Brown Band at one stage. In November 2010, the band self-released a self-titled album. Stapleton signed as a solo artist to Mercury Nashville, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group Nashville, in 2013.
Stapleton also wrote the theme song for WSM-The AM’s WSM All Nighter with Marcia Campbell, an American radio show with a huge trucker following, “All-Nighter Comin’.” He co-wrote the song with Vince Gill and Al Anderson, who also contributed vocals. Stapleton’s songs have appeared on the soundtracks of a number of feature films, including Valentine’s Day, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, and Hell or High Water.
Stapleton and his wife Morgane performed “Amanda,” a Waylon Jennings tune, live at the Grand Ole Opry in 2013. In November 2015, they performed a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR.
Lady Antebellum performed with Stapleton at the 2014 CMT Artist of the Year celebration, playing Stapleton’s song “Drink a Beer,” which Luke Bryan had recorded, in honour of Bryan, who was unable to attend the ceremony due to a death in his family.
Stapleton had previously performed it during Bryan’s performance of the same song at the 2013 CMA Awards. Traveller, Stapleton’s debut solo album, was released on May 5, 2015.
’37’ Stapleton co-produced the album with producer Dave Cobb in Nashville’s RCA Studio A. On the record, he plays guitar and sings with a live band that includes J.T. Cure (from The Jompson Brothers), Robby Turner (pedal steel), Derek Mixon (drums), Mickey Raphael (harmonica), and his wife Morgane Stapleton (harmonies). Stapleton stressed the importance of the band lineup that came together during the production and promotion of the album, claiming that his experience with Cure and Mixon (he has known and played with Cure for over 20 years), as well as Cobb’s producing, which included contributing acoustic guitar during the recording process, contributed to the richness of the recording process.
After his father died in 2013, Stapleton took a cross-country road trip, which he said influenced the record. He claimed to have written the title track “Traveller” while on a road trip with his wife from Phoenix, Arizona, to Nashville, Tennessee, via New Mexico. His wife assisted him in sifting through 15 years of songs to choose nine to begin recording with. (42nd)

Music publications hailed the show as a career-defining moment, and it, along with his other wins that night, catapulted him to national prominence. During a live appearance at the annual CMT Artists of the Year show in December 2015, Stapleton won the 2015 CMT Artists of the Year Breakout award. Traveller was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year and won Best Country Album and Best Country Solo Performance. It also took home the Academy of Country Music’s Album of the Year award. As of July 2017, it had sold a total of 2 million copies in the United States, making it the best-selling country album of 2016.
Stapleton and his wife Morgane contributed the song “You Are My Sunshine” to producer Dave Cobb’s Southern Family compilation album project in 2016. On Jake Owen’s album American Love, he worked with him on the song “If He Ain’t Gonna Love You.”
