Dan Gutman is an American author who primarily writes children’s literature. He was born on October 19, 1955. His works include the children’s book series Baseball Card Adventures, which started with Honus & Me, and the series My Weird School, which began with the same book. Gutman was born in New York City, and a year later, he moved to Newark, New Jersey, with his family. On June 1, 1968, Gutman’s father left the family and never returned.
His mother, Adeline, who had been a housewife, went to work as a secretary and took care of Dan and his elder sister, Lucy. After completing his high school education at Vailsburg in Newark, Gutman went on to get his degree in psychology from Rutgers University in 1977. He started with a doctor technology, but he dropped out and relocated to New York City in 1980 to a career as a writer instead.
After relocating to New York City, Gutman began a publishing career as an editor and writer. In 1982, he was hired as the first employee of Video Game Player, which would subsequently become Computer Games. He said, “I began publishing a magazine devoted to video games, and suddenly, I became a specialist in video games.” It was then that I began writing about computers and them. This is an adult-only event. It was only at a very late stage that I concluded that writing for adults was not my forte.
It took me a very long time to figure out that creating material geared toward children was where my strengths lay. The idea of his first piece of writing is that he discovered a Honus Wagner T206 baseball card stashed away in the attic of his next-door neighbor. Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Dorothy Maguire, Abner Doubleday, Satchel Paige, Jim Thorpe, Ray Chapman, Roberto Clemente, Ted Williams, and Willie Mays all make appearances in subsequent volumes in the series.
The original short tale, “Honus and Me,” was adapted into the television movie “The Winning Season,” which aired on Turner Network Television and starred Matthew Modine and Kristin Davis. During an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver that aired in August of 2016, the comedian compared the presidential campaign that Donald Trump ran in 2016 and the book The Kid Who Ran for President, published in 1996. Some of my best books were never really able to find an audience. “The e-book revolution can provide me and other authors who, like me, did not become overnight sensations with a way to finally get an audience for some of our books that may not have been popular the first time around.

My goal is to compose tales so fascinating that after children finish listening to them for an hour, they will have the impression that they have been playing a movie in their heads.
Mr. Gutman taught the pupils a valuable lesson: Never Give Up! Both perseverance and skill are crucial to one’s success. Before discovering that writing children’s books was his true calling, Gutman spent 15 years pursuing a variety of literary vocations, including trying his hand at creating comedic works. Because Gutman did not like reading when he was a child, he is well aware of the difficulties he encounters in his current role as an author for children.
The students at South Mountain were ecstatic to demonstrate their familiarity with his works, were well-prepared to pose challenging questions, and were happy to be the first to hear an excerpt from a brand-new book that has yet to be published.
