Dileep is a Malayalam actor who has acted in a number of films during the course of his career. He is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in Malayalam film. While working as an assistant to filmmaker Kamal, he has also created a few of short films of his own. Even though some critics claim that Dileep is stereotyped in humorous parts, Dileep, who began his career as a mimicry artist, has found success in films, particularly comedy, despite criticism that he is stereotyped in comedic roles. He has also performed serious roles in films such as Dhosth, The Don, and Lion, among others.

Dileep was born on October 27, 1969, in the village of Desom, Aluva, in the state of Ernakulam. His real name is Gopalakrishnan, and he lives in Chennai. Following high school, he went on to study at Aluva U.C. College and then at Maharajas College in Ernakulam, where he graduated with honours. While in high school and college, his acting ability was mostly unrecognised, as evidenced by the fact that he got few honours or accolades.

Gopalakrishan was a regular high school kid in terms of appearance and behaviour. While attending UC College between 1985 and 1987, he sought to perform as a mimicry artist but was unsuccessful. After enrolling at Maharajas College to pursue a B.A. in Economics in 1989, Gopalakrisnan began to devote significant time to imitation practise. Even though mimicry was just getting started in Kerala, the state has a promising future ahead of it. Following the completion of his Master of Arts in History studies, Dileep made the decision to pursue a career in the arts.

He began his performing career as a mimicry performer with the ensemble Kalabhavan, which he still performs with today. Later, he was offered the role as assistant director to director Kamal, which he accepted. While working as an assistant director, Dileep took on a few small roles, starting with a cameo in Ennodu Ishtam Koodaamo, which was a quick scene (1992). Jayaram, an actor, took him in and reared him as his own. He presented his name as a recommendation to a large number of directors. His first major role as a hero was in the 1994 film Manathe Kottaram, which he also directed.

Sallapam (1996) constituted a watershed moment in his career, as it signalled the beginning of his journey towards more serious parts. Sallapam was the vehicle via which he broke into the Malayalam film business. With the success of the film, Dileep has demonstrated that he has the potential to remain in the industry for an extended period of time. It was his debut film that earned him the reputation of being a talented comedian. By the time Punjabi House, a Rafi-Mecartin film, hit the theatres, Dileep had already done his study and had come up with some numbers that were good enough to win the hearts of both his well-wishers and his opponents alike.

With roles in films such as Thenkasipattanam (1996), Kalyana Sougandhikam (1998), Punjabi House (1998), and Ee Parakkum Thalika (2001), he established himself as a leading Malayali actor and comedy performer. Later films, such as Joker and Meesha Madhavan, propelled him to stardom even further. Several of his subsequent films, like Kunjikoonan, Kalyanaraman, CID Moosa and others, were critical and commercial successes in Malayalam.

Critics have credited him with introducing “Slapstick comedy” to Malayalam cinema, which had previously been praised for being “realistic” and “emotionally effective.”

Dileep dared to venture outside of his comedic comfort zone on occasion, and he was rewarded with critical acclaim. Many people praised his acting in the offbeat film Kadhavaseshan (2004), which he directed. Several honours, including the Kerala State Film Awards’ special jury prize for his performance as a transvestite man from a fishing family in Chanthupottu (2005), were bestowed upon him for his work.

He gave excellent performances in the action movie Runway (2004), Kochirajavu (2005), Lion (2006), Chess (2006), and DON (2006). He also appeared in the drama film DON (2006). (2006). Runway and Lion were both huge successes in them. Chess went on to become a popular film, whereas DON was a mediocre success.

He made his feature film debut with Vinodayathra, directed by the legendary Sathyan Anthikkad, which was released in April 2007. It was one of the most well-received Malayalam films of 2007, and it was released in 2007.

Dileep grew up in the Indian state of Kerala, where he was born and reared. He began his professional life as a mime artist at Kalabhavan (centre for learning performing arts in Kochi). Following that, he made an appearance on Asianet’s ‘Comicola,’ a comedy programme.
Later, he worked as an assistant director on Kamal’s Malayalam film ‘Ulladakkam,’ in which he played the role of Kamal (1991).In 1992, he made his acting debut in the Malayalam film ‘Ennodishtam Koodamo,’ in which he played the lead role.

He worked in a variety of languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and Kannada, among others. He also contributed his voice to the Onam-themed comedy CD ‘De Maveli Kombathu,’ which was released in 2008. ‘Twenty:20’ (2008), a multi-starrer Malayalam film produced by Dileep under his own home production company, ‘Graand Productions,’ was released to raise money for the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) (AMMA). In 2011, he got his first Kerala State Best Actor Award for his performance in the Malayalam film ‘Vellaripravinte Changathi,’ for which he was nominated.

His singing abilities are also well-documented, as evidenced by his performances in songs such as Theme Music from the film ‘Chandranudikkunna Dikkil’ (1999), Onnaam Malakeri from the film ‘Kalyaanaraaman’ (2002), Saare Saare from the film ‘Thilakkam’ (2003), Kandaal Njaanoru from the film ‘Sound Thoma’ (2012), and Ashakos (2013). On July 10, 2017, the Kerala State Police apprehended him for allegedly plotting a rape attempt against an Indian film actress.
