Elizabeth Joanna Mitchell is an American actress who was born on March 27, 1970, and stands at a height of 5′ 9″ (1.75 m). In my dissertation, I use the figure of the cupid to investigate the visual rhetorics of marginality, tactility, and power relations in the Roman-built environment.
Another project that is still ongoing focuses on “interactive” triclinium floor mosaics from Gallia Narbonensis. These mosaics encourage viewers to imagine themselves as participants in the mythological scene that is shown on the floor. More generally speaking, I am fascinated by ornament and the art of marginal spaces, as well as embodied and phenomenological approaches to objects and architecture, body language in Greco-Roman visual culture, ancient representations of slavery and childhood, personifications, and how mythological and fantastical imagery connects to wider social structures and norms.
