Ellen Burstyn, who was born as Edna Rae Gillooly, is an American actress who has been most known for her films in the 1970s, including ‘The Last Picture Show.’ For six decades she has been continually involved in film, theatre, and TV, receiving various prizes and awards along the way, including an Academy Award and numerous nominations for her performances for the Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award. Ellen Burstyn was born in Detroit, Michigan, Corrine Marie, and John Austin Gillooly, on December 7, 1932. She has ancestors in French, German, American natives, and Irish.Her parents split when she was young, and Burstyn and Jack and Steve, together with her second husband, continued to live.

She studied at Cass Technical High School, where she was the chairman of her junior school, a student council member, and a cheerleader. After the failure in her senior year, she left school, and soon after she landed work as a model in a department shop.

From 1955 until 1956, Ellen Burstyn performed on ‘The Jackie Gleason Show’ as a dancing girl. Later, under the name “Ellen McRae,” she decided to begin her acting career. In 1958, Ellen Burstyn was seen in a ‘Kraft Television Theater’ program. She was minor in a variety of TV programs throughout the years, including The Loretta Young Show, Surfside 6, The Sunset Strip, Gunsmoke, Ben Casey, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis and The doctors.


She played Julie Parsons from 1967–68 in ‘The Iron Horse,’ a Western TV show later released as the ‘Scalplock’ copy. The comedy film Alex in Wunderland was made by the actress and the drama picture Tropic of Cancer was made in 1970.

She played Lois Farrow for the movie “The Last Picture Show,” where she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the Academy Award.

In 1973, in ‘The Exorcist’ as Chris MacNeil, Burstyn featured, a supernatural horror picture based on the same novel by William Peter Blatty in 1971. The film, directed by Linda Blair, Jason Miller, and Max von Sydow, was awarded two Burstyn nominations.

In 1974 she played the leading part in the movie ‘Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,’ a widow who travels the country with her son to seek a better life. The performance of the actress was highly admired and she won both the Academy Award for Best Actress and the BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actress.

She was cast in 1978 with Alan Alda for Robert Mulligan’s love picture ‘Same Time, Next Year.’ Burstyn finished the decade with her performance as Edna Mae McCauley in ‘Risrection,’ which chronicles the story of an old lady who survived the road accident that killed her husband.

The actress made in 1981 the movie The People vs. Jean Harris and the semi-autobiographical movie ‘Silence of the North.’ She featured in “Twice in a Lifetime,” four years later, depicting the character of a wife whose husband told her for another woman.

In 1986-87, Burstyn performed in her own TV comedy program The Ellen Burstyn Show, and was also included in the TV film Pack of Lies.

She has appeared in the following years in numerous little and large screen projects, including ‘When you remember Me,’ ‘Our Son, the matchmaker,’ ‘The Patron of Liars,’ ‘Dying Young,’ ‘How to Make an American Quilt,’ and ‘Playing by Heart,’ amongst others.

In the comedy-drama series ‘That’s Life,’ she played Dolly DeLucca from 2000 to 2002. She also played in ‘Mermaid,’ a television film based on the actual tale of a woman named Desiree Leanne Gill who learns to accept the death of her father.
