Gautam Shantilal Adani is an Indian billionaire industrialist, chairman, and founder of the Adani Group — a global company headquartered in Ahmedabad that is engaged in port growth and operations in India. Adani is the president of the Adani Foundation, led primarily by his wife, Priti Adani.

Gautam Shantilal Adani Biography:

Gautam Adani was born on 24 June 1962 in the Jain family of Shantilal and Shanti Adani in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He has seven siblings and his parents have emigrated from the town of Tharad in the northern part of Gujarat. His dad was a textile merchant.

He was educated at the Sheth Chimanlal Naginda Vidyalaya School in Ahmedabad. He enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Gujarat University but dropped out in the second year. Adani was interested in business, but not in his father’s textile business. Gautam Adani has been married to Priti Adani. He likes to read, especially the books of Tony Robbins.

Political Career:

In 1978, when he was a teenager, Adani moved to Mumbai to work as a diamond sorter for the Mahendra Brothers. He worked there for 2-3 years before setting up his own diamond brokerage firm in Zaveri Bazaar, Mumbai.

In 1981, his elder brother Mansukhbhai Adani bought a plastics unit in Ahmedabad and asked him to manage the operation. This venture turned out to be Adani’s gateway to global trade through imports of polyvinyl chloride ( PVC).

In 1985, he began importing primary polymers for small-scale industries. In 1988, Adani set up Adani Exports Limited, now known as Adani Enterprises Limited – the holding company of the Adani Group. Originally, the company dealt with agricultural and power commodities.

In 1991, the policy of economic liberalization turned out to be favorable to his company and he began to expand the business to trade in metals, textiles, and agro-products. In 1993, the Government of Gujarat announced the management outsourcing of the Mundra Port, and in 1995, Adani was awarded the contract.

He set up the first jetty in 1995. The operations originally run by Mundra Port & Special Economic Zone were transferred to Adani Ports & SEZ Limited (APSEZ). The company is now the largest private multi-port operator. Mundra Port is India’s largest private-sector port with a handling capacity of nearly 210 million tons per year.

The power business arm of Adani Group – Adani Power Limited was founded in 1996 by Adani. Adani Power holds thermal power plants with a capacity of 4620 MW, the largest private thermal power producer in the world.

Adani entered the Power Generation business in 2006. From 2009 to 2012, Carmichael Coal was acquired in Queensland and Abbot Point Port in Australia.

In May 2020, Adani won the world’s largest solar offer for $6 billion from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). Adani Green will take over the 8000 MW photovoltaic power plant project and Adani Solar will establish an additional production capacity of 2,000 MW of solar cells and modules.

Philanthropy:

Gautam Adani is the President of the Adani Foundation, funded by the Adani Group. It was founded in the year 1996. Apart from Gujarat, the Foundation operates in the states of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.

In March 2020, Rs 100 crore donated to the PM CARES Fund through the philanthropy arm of his community to counter the Coronavirus outbreak. The donation of Rs 5 Crore to the Gujarat CM Relief Fund and Rs 1 Crore to the Maharashtra CM Relief Fund was made.

Controversy:

During the Loksabha elections in India in 2014, Adani was accused of a number of disputes. He was accused of endorsing Narendra Modi for his campaign in the Bharatiya Janata Party. Even though Modi had claimed in the national media that he had no special favors with Modi, Modi was seen traveling on Adani’s chartered aircraft to rally across India. To counter this allegation, Adani spoke in an interview with CNBC and clarified that the BJP had paid the Adani Group market price for the use of its aviation services.

It was reported that the NDA government-supported Adani by allegedly waiving Rs. 200 crore fine on Adani Port and SEZ. Adani, later, in an interview, clarified that the fine had not been dropped and that the government had not favored Adani either. He also explained that the mine is operated by the Rajasthan Government and that the Adani Group is just a mining contractor.
