Gulzar, or Sampooran Singh Kalra, is a distinguished Indian lyricist, film director, screenwriter, poet, and novelist. His stage name, Gulzar, also knows him. He began his career in the Indian film business as a member of Bimal Roy Productions and had his first break as a lyricist working with the famed music director S.D. Burman in the film Bandini that Bimal Roy produced. Because of the film’s success, Roy hired him as an assistant permanently. Moving on, Gulzar contributed writing to films directed by renowned filmmakers such as Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Asit Kumar Sen.

Sampooran Singh Kalra was born on August 18, 1934, in Dina, located in the Jhelum District of the Punjab region in what was then British India but is now Pakistan.
His parents, Makhan Singh Kalra and Sujan Kaur were members of the Khatri Sikh community. He studied translations of Rabindranath Tagore’s works at school, where he first became interested in literature and poetry. In particular, the results of Rabindranath Tagore served as a source of motivation for him. He enthusiastically participated in antaksharis, showed a significant interest in studying shairis, and listened to Hindustani music, notably the pieces performed on stringed instruments at his neighbor’s home. Gulzar was forced to give up his studies and come to Bombay, now known as Mumbai, to make a living and provide for his family when the Partition of India forced them to migrate to Amritsar. To support himself, he worked various odd jobs, one of which was at Vichare Motors on Bellasis Road. There, his duty was to touch up accident-damaged automobiles with the color of paint. He used to write poetry in his leisure time, but his father disapproved of his pursuing a profession in writing, so he started using the pen name Gulzar Deenvi, and later he just used the name Gulzar.
Gulzar got active with the Progressive Writers Association (PWA) when he was still a student in college. There, the poet, lyricist, and film producer Shailendra, as well as the film director Bimal Roy, inspired Gulzar to seek a career in the film industry. It was under Roy and film director, editor, and writer Hrishikesh Mukherjee that he got his start in the film industry. Gulzar initially turned down Roy’s request to contribute as a lyricist for the 1963 Hindi drama film Bandini, citing that he had no interest in becoming a composer at the time. Gulzar was working for Roy as an assistant director on the project at the time.
After some time, music director S.D. Burman persuaded him to become a lyricist, and he did so by penning the song Mora Gora Ang Lai Le in only five days. This was his first work in the field. Shailendra is responsible for the lyrics of many more songs in the film. Gulzar wrote both the dialogue and the songs for the 1968 Hindi film Aashirwad, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Gulzar is responsible for writing the story, script, and songs for the film Guddi, which Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed.
