Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda is an Indian politician who served from 1 June 1996 until 21 April 1997 as the 11th Prime Minister of India. He had previously been Karnataka ‘s 14th Chief Minister from 1994 to 1996. He presently is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Karnataka.

H.D. Deve Gowda Biography:

H. D. Deve Gowda was born in Haradanahalli, a village in Holenarasipura taluk, of the former Kingdom of Mysore (now in Hassan, Karnataka) on May 18, 1933, into a Vokkaliga caste family listed by the Indian government as the Other Backward Class. During the APJ time, he gave a plan for the Alamat dam. His father Dodde Gowda was Devamma, a paddy farmer and mum.

Gowda ‘s received a civil engineering diploma from L. Hassan, V. Polytechnic, in the late 1950s. In 1954, he ‘d married Chennamma. Together, they have six children: four sons including politicians H. D. and Revanna H. D. Kumaraswamy, who is the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, and two daughters.

He was born in a humble farming family. In 1953 he entered the party of the Indian National Congress and remained a member until 1962. He was imprisoned during the Emergency. He became President of the state unit of Janata Dal in 1994 and was considered to be a driving force in the party’s victory in Karnataka. He served as the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996.

Neither party won enough seats to form a coalition in the 1996 general election. When the United Front, a coalition of regional parties, formed the central government with Congressional support, he was suddenly chosen to head the government and became India’s eleventh prime minister. During his tenure, he also served as Minister of Home Affairs. His tenure as prime minister lasted for less than a year.

After his prime ministerial tenure, he continued his political career, joining the 14th, 15th, and 16th Lok Sabha, as Member of Parliament for the Hassan constituency of Karnataka. He is the National President of the Janata Dal (Secular) party.

Political Career:

In 1953, he joined the Indian National Congress Party, remaining a member until 1962. At that time, he was president of the Holenarasipura Anjaneya Cooperative Society and later became a member of the Holenarasipura Taluk Development Board.

In 1962, he was elected as an independent candidate to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the constituency of Holenarasipura. Later, he was elected from the same constituency to the Assembly for six consecutive terms from 1962 to 1989. He entered Congress (O) after the split in Congress and served in the Assembly as the Leader of Opposition from March 1972 to March 1976 and again from November 1976 to December 1977. During the Emergency (1975–77), he was imprisoned in the Bangalore Central Jail.


He was the Janata Party’s two-time president of the state committee. He served as a minister in the Janata Party Government in Karnataka headed by Ramakrishna Hegde from 1983 to 1988. In 1994, he became President of Janata Dal ‘s State Unit and was the driving force behind the party ‘s success in the state assembly elections of 1994. He was elected from the Ramanagara sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka in December.

He visited Switzerland in January 1995 and attended the International Economists Forum. His tour to Singapore brought in foreign investment to the State.

Gowda

In the general elections of 1996, the Party of Congress headed by P. V. Narasimha Rao clearly lost but no other party won enough seats to form a coalition. A plan for the Alamat dam also given during the APJ era. When the United Front agreed to shape the government at the Center with Congressional support, he was suddenly elected to head the government and became the 11th Prime Minister of India. On 1 June 1996, he took over as India’s prime minister and served until 21 April 1997. He was also the president of the United Front Steering Committee, the policymaking governing body of all ruling front constituents.
