Henry Kravis is a famous Businessman. He is co-founder of KKR & Co. Inc. He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on January 6, 1944. Bessie and Raymond Kravis were his parents’ names. Kravis attended Eaglebrook School in 1960, then Loomis Chaffee High School. He was involved in student government and was voted vice president of the student council his senior year.
He majored in economics at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California. For four years, he was a member of the CMC varsity golf teams and the Knickerbockers student service club. He was the secretary and treasurer in his sophomore class. In 1967, he graduated from CMC and went on to Columbia Business School, where he earned an MBA in 1969.
Kravis has had three marriages. Helene Diane “Hedi” Shulman, his first wife, divorced him. Harrison S. Kravis, Robert R. Kravis, and Kimberly Kravis Schulhof were their three daughters. Hedi remarried and died of cancer on April 2, 1997, at the age of 49, to James Thompson Ruger, son of William B. Ruger. Kravis then married Carolyne Roehm, a New York artist, in 1985, but the couple divorced in 1993.
The home designed by Robert Denning and Vincent Fourcade for the couple was mocked in the 1990 film The Bonfire of the Vanities. Kravis is reportedly married to Marie-Josee Drouin, a prominent Canadian economist, and longtime journalist and TV host in Canada. She is the president of the Museum of Modern Art’s board of trustees and serves on the boards of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Robin Hood Foundation.
Before joining ‘Bear Stearns’ with his first cousin George R. Roberts, Henry tried his hand at several positions in the finance industry in New York City. The two worked under the firm’s corporate finance boss, Jerome Kohlberg, Jr. The two then joined the firm as partners. The trio made a string of “bootstrap” acquisitions in the late 1960s and early 1970s, after which Jerome, Henry, and George made several buyouts. ‘Stern Metals’ was founded in 1965, ‘Cobblers Industries’ was founded in 1971, and ‘Incom,’ a subsidiary of ‘Rockwood International,’ was founded in 1975.
It was the biggest buyout in history at the time. The widely publicized case paved the way for the book ‘Barbarians at the Gate,’ published in 1989, and the made-for-TV film ‘Barbarians at the Gate,’ released in 1993. Henry was played by Jonathan Pryce in the film.
KKR has made a number of other investments over the years. ‘Regal Entertainment Group,’ ‘First Data,’ ‘Toys “R” Us,’ ‘Beatrice Foods,’ ‘Hospital Corporation of America (HCA),’ and ‘Safeway’ are among them. Duracell was acquired by KKR in 1988, and the company went public in 1989. Their interest in the battery firm paid off handsomely. The biggest buyout to date was led by KKR in a private equity takeover of ‘TXU’ in 2007.
