Anand Gopal Mahindra is the head of the Mahindra Group, a Mumbai-based commercial conglomerate, and an Indian billionaire businessman. Anand started as an Executive Assistant to the Finance Director at Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd (MUSCO) in 1981. He was named President of the MUSCO and Deputy Managing Director in 1989. He was the driving force behind the Mahindra Group’s expansion into new sectors including real estate development and hospitality management.
He joined Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., an Indian manufacturer of off-road vehicles and agricultural tractors, as Deputy Managing Director on April 4, 1991. Anand became the Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd in April 1997, and subsequently the Vice Chairman in 2001.
In August 2012, he succeeded his uncle, Keshub Mahindra, as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of the Mahindra Group. Anand was re-designated as Executive Chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd in November 2016, while he retained his position as Chairman of the Mahindra Group.
Kotak Mahindra Bank has Anand as a co-promoter. He stopped being a promoter in 2013 and became a non-executive director instead. The Mahindra Group now has a market capitalization of US$19 billion and is one of India’s top ten industrial conglomerates.
The Economist has dubbed Anand Mahindra “India’s Face of Capitalism.” He was named ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ for the year 2013 by Forbes India Magazine. Anand co-founded EPIC, an Indian television station that broadcasts Hindi material, alongside Mukesh Ambani and Mahesh Samat in 2014. Following the sale of both co-founders’ shares to Mahindra in 2016, he became the sole owner.
In 2014, Anand was named one of Fortune Magazine’s World’s 50 Greatest Leaders, and in 2011, he was named one of Asia’s top 25 most prominent businesspeople. In 2009, he was co-chairman of the World Economic Forum. He contributed to Mckinsey & Company’s book, “Reimagining India.” He became president of the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2003.
He was listed in Fortune Magazine’s 2011 list of Asia’s 25 most influential entrepreneurs as one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.” Anand was named ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ for 2013 by Forbes (India). In January 2020, he received the Padma Bhushan Award, which is India’s third-highest civilian honour.
