The IFPI awarded BTS the Global Recording Artist of the Year for 2020 on March 4, 2021, making them the first Asian and non-English speaking act to do so. With Map of the Soul: 7 at number one, Be at number two, and Map of the Soul: 7–The Journey at number eight on the Global Album Sales Chart of 2020, BTS filled three places. Map of the Soul: 7 took the top spot on the newly created Global Album All Format Chart, while Be came in fourth.

BTS also made their debut appearance on the 2020 Global Digital Single Chart, with “Dynamite” landing in tenth place. BTS became the first Korean candidate to sing their own song at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards on March 14, when they sang “Dynamite.” It was their third time attending the Grammy Awards. BTS made an appearance on You Quiz on the Block, a South Korean variety show, on March 24, and shattered the show’s viewership records. BTS hosted a virtual performance on their YouTube channel on April 17, almost a year after the previous year’s virtual concert, dubbed Bang Bang Con 21, which featured video from three of their prior in-person gigs. BTS staged a one-hour broadcast countdown on April 26 that included a melting chunk of butter. At the end of the countdown, they announced that their second English-language song, “Butter,” will be released on May 21. Its music video set a new record for the most concurrent watchers on YouTube, with 3.9 million, and was the most viewed YouTube video on its first day, with 108.2 million views.

The trio’s fourth number one in the previous nine months, “Butter,” made them the fastest artist to reach four number ones since Justin Timberlake a decade and a half ago, and the fastest group to earn four number ones since the Jackson 5 in 1970. BTS, the Best, the group’s sixth compilation album, sold 572,000 copies on June 16, 2021, surpassing SixTones’ previous record of 467,000 to become Japan’s best-selling record in a week. Butter became the group’s longest-running #1 debut in Hot 100 history on June 28, breaking Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’s 23-year record (1998).

BTS has received several important accolades, including the Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards, and has been nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
