Tirath Singh Rawat, the 9th and current Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, is an Indian politician. In the 2019 Indian general election, he was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, from Garhwal as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was also the previous Minister of Education of Uttarakhand. Representing 9 February 2013 to 31 December 2015, he served as the party leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party Uttarakhand and was a member of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly from the Chaubattakhal seat from 2012 to 2017.
Rawat got involved in student politics and rose through the ranks to become the organisational secretary of the ABVP Uttarakhand branch and then the national secretary of the ABVP. In 1992, he was also the president of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University’s student union. From 1983 until 1988, he was a major worker for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, known as a pracharak.
He was the state vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Uttar Pradesh. He was the newly established state of Uttarakhand’s first education minister. After that, he was chosen as Uttarakhand’s state general secretary in 2007, followed by state chief electoral officer and state membership chief.
He was elected to the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 2012 and became the Uttarakhand BJP Chief in 2013. He won four of the six BJP mayoral positions in municipal corporation elections while serving as President of the Uttarakhand BJP. On May 23, 2019, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Garhwal seat. He won by more than 3.50 lakh votes over his nearest competitor, Manish Khanduri.
