J. K. Rowling is the nickname of Joanne Rowling. She is a philanthropist, film producer, television producer, and screenwriter from the United Kingdom. J.K. Rowling Biography:
Joanne Rowling was born on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire. Her father’s name is Peter Rowling and her mother’s name is Anne Volant Rowling. In 1964, her parents met on a train leaving King’s Cross Station bound for Arbroath. They married on March 14, 1965. Dugald Campbell, a Scottish man from Lamlash, was one of Rowling’s maternal great-grandfathers. During World War I, her mother’s French paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was honored the War Cross for his exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte.
Rowling initially thought Volant had got the Legion of Honor during the war, as she stated when she received it herself in 2009. She later discovered the truth after appearing in an episode of the UK genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are?, in which she discovered that the Legion of Honour was awarded to a different Louis Volant. When she heard her grandfather’s bravery story and discovered that the War Cross was for “ordinary” soldiers like her grandfather, a waiter, she declared that the War Cross was “better” than the Legion of Honour.
When Rowling was 23 months old, her sister Dianne was born at their home. When Rowling was four years old, her family relocated to the nearby village of Winterbourne. Rowling used to write fantasy stories as a child, which she would frequently read to her sister. Rowling shifted to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, near Chepstow, Wales, when she was nine years old. Sean Harris, her Upper Sixth Form best friend, owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she claims inspired a flying version in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. She became interested in rock music as a teenager, listening to the Clash, the Smiths, and Siouxsie Sioux, adopting the latter’s look with back-combed hair and black eyeliner, which she still wore when she started university.’
Rowling went to St Michael’s Primary School as a child, which was founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Alfred Dunn, her headmaster at St Michael’s, has been recommended as the motivation for Harry Potter’s headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Her mother worked in the science department at Wyedean School and College, where she attended secondary school. Her first secondary school English teacher, Steve Eddy, recalls her as “not exceptional,” but “one of a group of girls who were bright and quite good at English.” Rowling completed A-levels in English, French, and German, achieving two As and a B and serving as head girl.
Rowling took the entrance examinations for Oxford University in 1982 but was not accepted, earning a BA in French and Classics at the University of Exeter. Martin Sorrell, an Exeter French professor, recalls “a quietly competent student, with a denim jacket and dark hair, who, in academic terms, gave the appearance of doing what was required.” Rowling recalls doing little work and spending her time reading Dickens and Tolkien. Rowling graduated from Exeter in 1986 after a year of study in Paris. Rowling published a short essay about her time studying Classics in 1988, termed “What Was the Name of That Nymph Again? or Greek and Roman Studies Recalled,” in the University of Exeter’s journal Pegasus.
Career:
Rowling has got honorary degrees from the University of St Andrews, the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, the University of Exeter (which she attended), the University of Aberdeen, and Harvard University, where she delivered the commencement address in 2008. Rowling was named a Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur by French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2009. Rowling was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (HonFRSE) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2002. (FRSL). She was also named a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCPE) in 2011 for her contributions to literature and philanthropy.
