Chan was born in Hong Kong to destitute parents. When Chan was six years old, his family relocated to Canberra, Australia, but the following year, his parents sent him back to Hong Kong to attend a strict boarding school where pupils were trained in Jingxi. In 1976–78, independent cinema producer Lo Wei put him in a series of forgettable kung fu films in an attempt to identify a replacement to the late Bruce Lee.

Rather than emulating Lee’s tough persona, Chan introduced his own brand of fumbling physical comedy in 1978 with She xing diao shou (Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow) and Zui Quan (Drunken Master). He later wrote and directed Xiao Quan guai Zhao, in which he also starred (1979; The Fearless Hyena).

Chan retained entire creative control on Shi di chu ma (1980; The Young Master), his debut film with Golden Harvest, which he later helped develop into Hong Kong’s largest film empire. In the early 1980s, while attempting unsuccessfully to break into English-language filmmaking, he shifted away from conventional martial arts period films and into modern action-adventure films such as ‘A’ jihua (1983; Project A) and Jing cha gu shi (1985: Police Story), as well as its sequels.

His directorial abilities for a fight and stunt choreography were on display in these films. His own feats were frequently extremely dangerous; he came dangerously close to death when he shattered his skull and lost his hearing in Lung hing foo dai (1986; Armour of God).

Chan finally broke into the American market in the 1990s. In 1995, he earned the cable network MTV’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and the following year, his blockbuster Hung fan Kui (1995; Rumble in the Bronx) was released in the United States, among several of his other iconic Hong Kong films. Chan co-starred in Rush Hour (1998) alongside American comedian Chris Tucker, which was a box office smash and spawned two sequels (2001 and 2007).

Chan remained active in both Hollywood (though he despised the restrictions it imposed on performers) and Hong Kong cinema. He acted in films such as Shanghai Noon (2000), The Tuxedo (2002), The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), and The Spy Next Door in the United States (2010). Chan later starred in The Foreigner, a revenge thriller based on the 1984 action film The Karate Kid (2017).

He provided voice work for Kung Fu Panda (2008) and its sequels (2011 and 2016); The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature (2017); and The LEGO Ninjago Movie (2017). Xin jing cha gu shi (2004; New Police Story); Bo bui gai wak (2006; Baby); Xinhai gaming (2011; 1911), a historical drama in which he played as Chinese revolutionary Huang Xing; Shen tan Pu Songling (2019; The Knight of Shadows: Between Yin and Yang); and Vanguard (2020). Chan became the first Chinese actor to be honored with an honorary Academy Award in 2016, for his “distinctive international career.”

Kung fu (Chinese [Wade-Giles romanization]: ; Pinyin gongfu) is a martial art that is both a type of exercise with a spiritual component derived through focus and self-discipline and a mostly unarmed mode of personal fighting frequently equated with karate or tae kwon do. The phrase kung fu can also refer to the methodical preparation required to undertake any skilled endeavor without being influenced by the brain or emotions.

Kung fu as a martial technique dates all the way back to the Zhou era (1111–255 BC), if not earlier. In the fifth century BC, the Daoists used it as a kind of exercise. Its prescribed stances and actions are founded on meticulous observation of human skeletal and muscular structure and physiology, and it makes extensive use of muscle coordination. The many moves of kung fu, the majority of which are imitations of animal fighting methods, are begun from one of five fundamental foot positions: upright posture, dragon stance, frog stance, horse riding stance, or snake stance.

To be eligible for an award in a particular year, a film must be publicly displayed for at least one week at a commercial theatre in Los Angeles County between January 1 and December 31. Foreign-language films that are submitted by their nation of origin and have not been seen in the United States are an exception to this requirement. Documentaries and short films have distinct eligibility standards and are submitted officially by their producers, whereas music prizes require submissions from the musical artist.
