Karen Sheila Gillan is a Scottish actress and filmmaker who was born on November 28, 1987. She began her acting career with guest parts on television until landing her breakthrough role as Amy Pond, the Eleventh Doctor’s major companion, in the BBC One series Doctor Who (2010–2013), for which she won critical acclaim and multiple accolades and nominations. Gillan’s early film appearances include Outcast (2010), a horror film, and Not Another Happy Ending, a romantic comedy (2013).


Gillan moved to the United States in 2013 and rose to prominence after acting in the film Oculus (2013) and appearing in the ABC/Hulu series Selfie (2014). She went on to have a lot of success as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films (2014–present) and as Ruby Roundhouse in the Jumanji film series (2017–present). She went to Edinburgh when she was 16 years old and finished an HNC Acting and Performance study at Telford College. At the age of 18, she travelled to London to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. A modelling agency scouted her while she was there.
