Jagger, the oldest son of a teacher and a housewife, was a good student and well-liked by his peers. At a young age, he became interested in American blues and R&B music, and at the age of 14, he purchased his first guitar. Jagger began collecting blues records by Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf when he was a teenager. Soon after, he and his friend Dick Taylor formed Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys, with Jagger as the lead singer.

Jagger was admitted to the London School of Economics in 1960. He was a commuter who lived at home and went to school in the city. Jagger, who was also working on his band, quickly acquired guitarist Keith Richards as a new member. . Jones, who wanted to form his own band, quickly enlisted the help of Jagger, Richards, and Taylor. Ian Stewart, a pianist, was also a founding member of the Rolling Stones. By 1963, Charlie Watts had taken over as the band’s drummer, and Taylor had left, to be replaced by Bill Wyman. Stewart, on the other hand, stayed on as tour manager and continued to play and record with the band. The Rolling Stones were marketed as a group of wild and rough rockers under the supervision of their manager Andrew Loog Oldham. The band’s outlandish flair helped them win a record deal with Decca Records. With his on-stage theatrics and sex appeal, Jagger was a vital component in the band’s rising popularity.

In 1964, the Stones first charted in the United Kingdom with a cover of Bobby Womack’s “It’s All Over Now.” The band published their debut album and toured the United States the same year, with “That Girl Belongs to Yesterday” becoming their first American hit. More chart-topping singles followed, including “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Paint It Black,” as well as albums like Out of Our Heads (1965) and Aftermath (1966). (1966).

Jagger’s personal life made news in 1967. During a police raid on Richards’ country property in England, he and his girlfriend, singer Marianne Faithfull, were among those arrested. Officers discovered drug paraphernalia and illegal drugs during their search. Both Jagger and Richards were charged with drug charges and found guilty, but their sentences were overturned on appeal. After authorities raided Jagger’s London residence two years later, they arrested him and Faithfull for drug possession.

Jagger and the rest of the band were hugely successful by the end of the decade. Beggars Banquet was released in 1968 and featured a simple rock sound. “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” one of the band’s singles, achieved No. 1 in the United Kingdom and No. 5 in the United States.

The Stones underwent a number of significant changes in 1969. Jones departed the band in June of that year after his numerous drug charges barred him from touring the United States. Mick Taylor, a 20-year-old guitarist, took his place. Less than a month later, Jones was discovered drowning in his pool. Jones was under the influence of narcotics and alcohol at the time of his death, according to the coroner’s report, and his death was ruled “death by misadventure.” The Stones gave a free concert in Hyde Park on July 5, 1969, two days after Jones’s untimely death, in protest to Jones’s untimely death. Originally planned as a showcase for their new guitarist, the concert was instead dedicated to Jones.

Before the show, Jagger read excerpts from Percy Shelley’s poem “Adonais,” which is about a friend’s death. As part of the memorial, stagehands released hundreds of white butterflies, and the Stones sang “I’m Yours And I’m Hers,” one of Jones’s favorite songs.

A few months later, tragedy struck again when the band released their highly anticipated Let It Bleed (1969) album. The Stones planned a free concert at Altamont Speedway in northern California in December to promote the album. A young man in the audience was stabbed and killed by a member of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle club as the band was performing “Under My Thumb.” The sad episode was documented on film for the documentary Gimme Shelter.
