On January 11, 2014, James Franklin was named Penn State’s 16th head football coach and begins his 12th season as a college head coach. Only five current FBS head coaches have led their teams to bowl games in each of Franklin’s first nine seasons as a head coach. It was the third-longest stretch in Penn State history, and the longest since 1993-2000 when PSU was rated for 121 straight weeks, when it was ranked in the AP Top 25 for 63 straight weeks. Franklin led Penn State to a record-setting 42 wins over the course of the 2016-19 season, the most in Big Ten era four-year stretch, and a record-setting 28 conference wins.
Franklin has been a head coach in the NFL and at the collegiate level for more than two decades now. 90 players Franklin coached went on to play in the NFL during his first 11 seasons as a head coach. In the last four NFL Drafts, 23 Penn State players were taken, the most in a four-draft period since 1993-96. (27 players drafted). His initial love was poetry, but he gave it up after being dissatisfied with the quality of his own work. Prose, on the other hand, was a different story. Young Franklin saw an essay collection by Joseph Addison and Sir Richard Steele from The Spectator, published in England in 1711–12, and saw in it an opportunity to improve his writing abilities. He read and reread the Spectator articles several times before trying to recollect them from memory.
In fact, he reworked them into both poetry and prose. All the Founders knew that writing well in the 18th century was such a rare talent that anyone who could do it well attracted notice. In the course of his life, “prose writing” became “of immense Use to me, and was a principal Means of my Advancement,” as he reflected in his Autobiography.”
The New-England Courant was started by James Franklin in 1721, and readers were encouraged to submit articles. After reading and maybe typing these contributions, Benjamin, now 16 years old, concluded that he could do it just as well on his own. The “Silence Dogood” articles, published in 1722, were a collection of 14 essays in which he mocked everything from funeral orations to the Harvard College students. Franklin found “exquisite pleasure” in the fact that his brother and others believed that only a knowledgeable and brilliant wit could have penned these pieces.
Franklin moved to Philadelphia at the age of 17 after failing to find work in New York City, which was a more open and accepting city than Puritan Boston at the time. In the Autobiography, one of the most striking events is the account of his arrival on a Sunday morning, exhausted and hungry. “Three wonderful Puffy Rolls” were what he received for three pence at a bakery. His future bride Deborah stood in the doorway of the Read family home as he strolled up Market Street, two cookies in each hand. “Thought I made, as I certainly did,” she said when she first saw him.
He was living with the Reads and working as a printer a few weeks later. By the spring of 1724, he was enjoying the company of other young men who shared his interest in reading and was being encouraged by Pennsylvania’s governor, Sir William Keith, to go into business for himself. Franklin returned to Boston in order to raise the money he needed. To get Franklin to England, where he could pick out his type and develop contacts with London stationers and bookstores before his father judged he was too young, Keith volunteered to pay the entire expense himself.
Franklin and Deborah Read exchanged “some pledges” about marriage and departed for London in November 1724 with a young friend, James Ralph, barely over a year after Franklin arrived in Philadelphia. His ship was well out to sea before he realized that Governor Keith had failed to deliver the letters of credit and introductions that he had previously promised.
Franklin was able to lend Ralph some money while he was still trying to make a name for himself as a writer in London after swiftly finding work in his trade. In addition to theater, the two young guys relished the city’s other attractions, such as its ladies. When he was in London, Benjamin Franklin published his Deistic book A Dissertation on Liberty and Necessity, Pleasure and Pain (1725), which was influenced by the fact that he had set type for William Wollaston’s moral tract The Religion of Nature Delineated while in New York.
Benjamin Franklin stated that because humans lack true freedom of choice, they are not morally liable for their actions. His self-indulgent behavior in London and the lack of communication with Deborah, whom he only wrote once, may have been justified by this. All but one copy of the pamphlet were burned by him after he eventually denounced it.
