Jeffrey Wright, who stars in the HBO series Westworld, has landed his next cinematic role. In the film adaptation of Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, in which he will make his directorial debut, he will play the role of Monk Ellison, an English professor who writes a satirical book under a pseudonym to expose the hypocrisies that exist within the publishing industry. The film will be directed by Cord Jefferson (via Deadline). But Monk’s invention has an immediate effect, which means he has to immerse himself even more in this fictitious persona he has taken.

Brye Adler and Jonathan Golfman, the respective presidents of MRC Film, released the following statement: “Cord has brilliantly brought the characters to life with such warmth and accessibility, capturing the sharpness and irreverence of Percival’s writing in the process. “There is no one better than Jeffrey Wright to represent the humor and annoyance of the character Monk in the show Monk. It is an honor for us to collaborate on producing this innovative and unique film with them and T-Street.”

In his own words, Jefferson, whose writing credits include the illustrious shows Watchmen and The Good Place on HBO, continued by saying: “Within a few minutes of cracking open Erasure, I was immediately overcome by the profound personal and universal resonance of the novel, and I was astounded to discover that something so pertinent to our world today had been written over three decades ago.

“I hope I can direct a movie as significant to others as the book was to me. Because of their assistance in bringing this adaptation to life, I owe an infinite appreciation to MRC, T-Street, Percival Everett, and Jeffrey Wright.”

The most notable parts that Jeffrey Wright has played are Felix Leiter in the Bond universe, Jim Gordon in The Batman, and Bernard Lowe in the now-canceled series Westworld.
