Forbes magazine recognized her as the most powerful celebrity in the world in 2012 and as the 38th most powerful woman that same year. 2018 Time magazine ranked her among the top 100 most influential persons worldwide. “If You Had My Love,” “I’m Real,” “Ain’t It Funny,” “All I Have,” and “On the Floor” are some of her most successful tracks that have charted on the US Billboard Hot 100.

She has been recognized with several awards and accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Billboard Icon Award, and the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, amongst others, in recognition of her significant contributions to the music recording business. Her other companies include a line of cosmetics, a line of apparel, a fragrance line, a production firm, and a foundation for philanthropic giving.

For the first ten years of Lopez’s life, Guadalupe worked as a homemaker. Later in Lopez’s life, she became a Tupperware salesperson and a kindergarten and gym teacher. After 33 years of marriage, they finalized their divorce in the 1990s.  She has an elder sister named Leslie and a younger sister named Lynda. Lopez is the middle kid in the family. One of the bedrooms was shared by three people. Lopez has said that she was raised in a “strict” environment.

She acquired a Catholic education by attending Holy Family School and the all-girls Preston High School. She was raised in a Roman Catholic home and attended Mass every Sunday. In high school, Lopez competed on a national track and field level, was a gymnastics team member, and played softball.  She was a lead dancer in the school performance of Godspell and participated in other school musicals. In the typical Puerto Rican household, there was “a lot of music,” Lopez and her sisters were encouraged to sing, dance, and compose their plays for family gatherings. The musical West Side Story had a significant impact on the young Jennifer Lopez, and it was then that she decided she wanted to have a career in show business.

When she was five, she enrolled in dance classes at Ballet Hispánico on the Upper West Side. She studied flamenco, jazz, and ballet at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club when she was a youngster, and she later passed on her knowledge of dance to younger students, including Kerry Washington.  Once she had her diploma from high school, she worked as a secretary at a legal office part-time and spent one-semester studying business at Baruch College in New York. When she was just 16 years old, Jennifer Lopez debuted in the film My Little Daughter, playing a supporting character. When she turned 18, she began her studies as a full-time student at the Phil Black Dance Studio in Manhattan. Before this, she had attended night lessons in jazz and tap dance at the school.

Her decision to forgo a college education to pursue a career in dancing did not sit well with her parents. Her mother requested that she move out of the family home, after which they did not communicate for eight months. After relocating to Manhattan, Lopez spent the first several months of her new life sleeping in the office of the dancing studio. In 1989, Lopez got her first work in the professional world and was with the musical revue show Golden Musicals of Broadway, for which she toured Europe for five months. She was the only member of the chorus who did not have a solo, and she later described the experience as a defining point in her life because it was then that she understood the significance of having a “thick skin” in the entertainment industry.

In the year 1990, she appeared in an episode of Hey! MTV Raps are dancing alongside MC Hammer. She also participated in the musical production Synchronicity and spent four months touring Japan as a chorus member.  When she returned to the United States, New Kids on the Block engaged her to be a backup dancer for their performance of “Games” at the 1991 American Music Awards.  She also performed in regional productions of Oklahoma! and Jesus Christ Superstar musicals, which took her all around the United States.  During this period, Jennifer Lopez was also a dancer, appearing in music videos such as “Summertime” by Doug E. Fresh, “Can’t Stop Loving You” by Richard Rogers, “Rampage” by EPMD, and “(Hurt Me! Hurt Me!) But the Pants Stay On” by Samantha Fox.

In her career as a professional dancer, Jennifer Lopez’s role as a jazz-funk dancer known as a Fly Girl on the sketch comedy television series In Living Color, which included comedians such as Jamie Foxx and Jim Carrey, was perhaps the job that brought her the most notoriety. During the New York audition, the show’s choreographer, Rosie Perez, observed that Jennifer Lopez possessed “star quality” and “did not complain, not once” when required to perform the dance routine repeatedly.

Because of the employment, Lopez relocated to Los Angeles in the latter half of 1991; during the day, she worked on the set of In Living Color, and in the evenings, she took acting workshops taught by Aaron Speiser. The chief executive officer of Virgin Records seriously contemplated signing The Fly Girls as a girl group to compete with the Spice Girls, but the deal ultimately fell through. Lopez resigned from her role as a Fly Girl in seasons three and four of In Living Color to pursue a career as a backup dancer for Janet Jackson. She also appeared in the music video for Janet Jackson’s song “That’s the Way Love Goes.” In late 1993, she was supposed to tour with Janet Jackson on her Janet World Tour, but she decided against it to pursue a career in acting instead.
