Kim Seok-jin is also recognized as Jin. He is a South Korean singer and songwriter who has been a member of the boy band BTS since June 2013. Kim collaborated on and released three solo tracks with BTS: “Awake” (2016), “Epiphany” (2018), and “Moon” (2020). In 2019, Kim released his first independent song, “Tonight,” as a digital single. He also appeared on the 2016 soundtrack for Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, alongside BTS member V. Kim’s falsetto and sentimental range as a singer, which have earned him critical acclaim.

In addition to singing, Kim has hosted a number of South Korean music shows from 2016 to 2018. Along with the other members of BTS, he was awarded the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit by the President of South Korea in 2018 for his efforts to Korean culture.

Jin Biography:

Kim Seok-jin was born in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, on December 4, 1992. His mother, father, and older brother make up his family.

Kim was scouted off the roadside by South Korean K-pop agency SM Entertainment when he was in junior high school, but he declined the offer at the time. He originally planned to be an actor, attending Konkuk University and graduating on February 22, 2017, with a degree in art and acting. He enrolled in graduate school at Hanyang Cyber University to study subjects other than music.

Kim currently resides in Hannam-dong, Seoul, South Korea. In 2018, he and his older brother opened Ossu Seiromushi, a Japanese-style restaurant in Seoul.

Career:

Big Hit Entertainment scouted Kim while he was walking down the street because of his good looks. Kim was studying acting at the time and had no musical background. Following that, he interviewed as an actor for Big Hit before becoming an idol trainee. Kim made his debut as one of BTS’s four vocalists on June 13, 2013, with their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. In 2016, Kim released his first co-produced track, “Awake,” a solo single from the album Wings. The song reached number 31 on the Gaon Music Chart and number 6 on the Billboard World Digital Singles Chart. He released a Christmas version of “Awake” on SoundCloud in December 2016.

Kim’s second solo, “Epiphany,” was released as a trailer for BTS’ then-upcoming live album Love Yourself: Answer on August 9, 2018. Billboard presented the song as a “building pop-rock melody” with lyrics about self-acceptance and self-love. The full version of the song was eventually released as a single on Answer, reaching number 30 on the Gaon Music Chart and number four on the Billboard World Digital Singles Chart. In October, he and other members of the group were awarded the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

“Moon,” his third solo song with BTS, was released on the 2020 studio album Map of the Soul: 7. “Moon,” according to Variety writer Jae-Ha Kim, is a power-pop song aimed at BTS fans. “Moon” reached number one on the Gaon Digital Chart and number two on the Billboard US World Digital Singles chart.

Kim partnered with fellow BTS member V on the song “It’s Definitely You,” which was released as part of the main soundtrack to Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. He also sang and released an alternate version of “So Far Away,” a song from BTS member Suga’s self-titled mixtape Agust D, with BTS member Jungkook. He has also appeared as a co-host on several Korean music award shows, including Music Bank and Inkigayo.

Kim released his first independent song, “Tonight,” on June 4, 2019, as part of the 2019 BTS Festa, a yearly event commemorating the band’s debut anniversary. Kim wrote the acoustic ballad with Big Hit Entertainment record producers Slow Rabbit and Hiss Noise. Kim and BTS leader RM wrote the lyrics, which were inspired by Kim’s relationship with his pets. The song received generally positive feedback, with praise for Kim’s vocals and the song’s calming atmosphere.

Kim released his second solo song “Abyss” on December 3, 2020, a day before his 28th birthday. Kim and fellow BTS member RM wrote the acoustic ballad, which was produced by BUMZU and Pdogg. Kim, BUMZU, and RM wrote the lyrics, which were inspired by Kim’s feeling of nervousness, doubt, and exhaustion. Kim discussed his imperfections about music in a post on the official BTS blog, and how those darker feelings drove him to write and release the song.
