Johnny Isakson, full name John Hardy Isakson, is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican on December 28, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2004, he was elected to the Senate and began representing Georgia in that body the following year. He previously served in the United States military.

In 1966, Isakson received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. He joined the Georgia Air National Guard that year and served until 1972, when he retired with the rank of staff sergeant. He started working for a real-estate company in 1967 and rose through the ranks to become its president (1979–99). During this time, Isakson married (1968) and had three children with his wife, Diane.

He was elected to the first of seven terms two years later, and he eventually became the Republican minority leader (1983–90). He was elected to the Georgia Senate, where he served from 1993 to 1996, after an unsuccessful bid for governor of Georgia in 1990. In the same year, he arrived in the United States. Isakson was elected to the House of Representatives in a special election in 1999. He was elected to the Senate in 2004 and began serving the following year.


Isakson was regarded as a staunch conservative. He was particularly interested in veterans’ issues, and he took the lead in hearings on the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014, which was passed in response to improprieties in the management of VA hospitals. He was also involved in international trade, particularly in trying to strengthen his home state’s position as a trading partner, and he cosponsored legislation to reform the federal budget process by switching it from an annual to a biannual cycle, with the first year focusing on appropriations and the second on spending oversight.

He also introduced legislation to repeal the Federal National Mortgage Corporation and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation’s charters and replace them with a new federal finance agency on several occasions.
