Kailash Vijayvargiya is a West Bengal-based Indian politician who has been the secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2015. He began his political career with the Indore Bharatiya Janata Party, where he served as mayor, a six-time legislator who never lost an assembly election, and a state government cabinet minister for over 12 years before being promoted to the party’s central leadership.

In 2014, Vijavargiya was appointed to lead the BJP’s election campaign in Haryana, where the party won a majority in the assembly election. With this victory, he was able to assume a more central role in party leadership, and in June 2015, he was appointed national general secretary by party president Amit Shah, as well as the new leader of the BJP in West Bengal.

Vijavargiya was born in Indore on May 13, 1956. His father’s name is Shankardayal Vijavargiya and his mother’s name is Ayodhya Devi Vijayvargiya. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree before going on to earn an LLB. Vijavargiya is married to Asha Vijayvargiya. The couple is blessed with two sons. One of whom is politician Akash Vijayvargiya.

Political Career:

In 1975, Vijayvargiya entered politics through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In 1983, he was elected as a corporator of the Indore Municipal Corporation, and in 1985, he was appointed to the standing committee. He served as the state secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP, and Indore, as well as the coordinator of the State BJP legal cell. In 1985, he was appointed state co-ordinator of Vidyarthi Parishad, in 1992, state vice-president of the BJYM, and in 1993, he was appointed national general secretary of the BJYM and Gujarat’s leader. In 1990, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2013, Vijayvargiya was elected to the Vidhan Sabha.

He oversaw the BJP’s Haryana state assembly election campaign in 2014, when the party won its first Haryana state assembly election, increasing the BJP’s tally from 4 to 47 seats. In 2015, he was appointed as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s National General Secretary as well as the party’s leader in West Bengal. He was named one of India’s top 100 influential people for the year 2021.

Mayoral stint:

In the year 2000, Vijayvargiya became the Indore Municipal Corporation’s first directly elected mayor. In 2003, he was elected president of the South Asia Mayors’ Council, and he led the Indian Voluntary Organization’s delegation to the World Earth Summit in Durban.

On December 8, 2008, Vijayvargiya was appointed in as a cabinet minister in the Madhya Pradesh Government, with portfolios of Public Works, Parliamentary Affairs, Urban Administration, and Development. On July 1, 2004, he was assigned a portfolio of Religious Trusts, Endowment, and Rehabilitation. On August 27, 2004, Vijayvargiya rejoined Babulal Gaur’s Council of Ministers as Public Works Minister. On December 4, 2005, he was re-inducted into Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Council of Ministers as a Minister of Public Works, Information Technology, and Science and Technology.

Vijayvargiya held portfolios of IT and Industries in Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s second cabinet (after the 2008 elections). Vijayvargiya held the portfolio of Urban Development in the third cabinet (following the 2013 elections).

Controversies:

1. He once compared Shah Rukh Khan to Dawood Ibrahim.
2. In another controversy in 2013, he stated that women who cross their limits should be punished, citing Sita’s abduction by Ravana when she crossed the Laxman-Rekha line.
