Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite is commonly referred to as Kaka. He is a retired Brazilian footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. Kaká is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation due to his performances as a playmaker in his prime at A.C. Milan, a period marked by his creative passing, goal scoring, and dribbles from midfield. He is one of only eight players in history to have won the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, and the Ballon d’Or.

Kaka Biography:

Kaka

Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite was born in Gama, Federal District. His mother’s name is Simone dos Santos and his father’s name is Bosco Izecson Pereira Leite. He grew up in a financially secure household, which allowed him to focus on both school and football at the same time. Rodrigo (nicknamed Digo) and Eduardo Delani, his younger brother, are both professional footballers. Digo used to call him “Caca” because he couldn’t pronounce “Ricardo” when they were younger; it eventually evolved into Kaka. There is no specific Portuguese translation for the word.

Kaká’s family relocated to So Paulo, in the homonymous state, when he was seven years old. His school had placed him in a local youth club called “Alphaville,” which had progressed to the finals of a local tournament. He was discovered there by his hometown club, So Paulo FC, who provided him a place in their youth academy. Kaká suffered a career-threatening and possibly paralysis-inducing spinal fracture at the age of 18 as a result of a swimming pool accident, but recovered completely. He credits God for his recovery and has since tithed his income to his church.

On December 23, 2005, Kaká married his childhood sweetheart Caroline Celico at the Rebirth in Christ church in So Paulo. The couple has two children: Luca Celico Leite (born on June 10, 2008) and Isabella (born 23 April 2011). Kaká and Celico declared their divorce on social media in 2015.

Kaká started his career with So Paulo when he was eight years old. He signed a contract at the age of 15 and led the So Paulo youth team to the Copa de Juvenil title. He made his senior team debut on February 1, 2001, and scored 12 goals in 27 games.

Kaká’s steady European interest resulted in his signing with the European champions, Italian club A.C. Milan, in 2003 for a reported €8.5 million, which club owner Silvio Berlusconi described in retrospect as “peanuts.” Within a month, he was promoted to the starting lineup, replacing Rui Costa in the attacking midfield playmaking role behind strikers Jon Dahl Tomasson, Filippo Inzaghi, and Andriy Shevchenko. In a 2–0 win over Ancona, he made his Serie A debut.

In the 2004–05 season, Kaká was a member of the five-man midfield, usually playing in a withdrawn role behind striker Andriy Shevchenko. Kaká scored his first hat-tricks in domestic competitions during the 2005–06 season. He scored his first Rossoneri hat-trick against Chievo on April 9, 2006, with all three goals coming in the second half.

Kaká won the Champions League when Milan defeated Liverpool 2–1 on May 23, 2007, avenging a two-year-old penalty loss.

On December 2, 2007, Kaká became the 8th Milan player to win the Ballon d’Or, finishing with 444 votes, far ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. On February 29, 2008, he extended his contract with Milan until 2013.

Kaká won the FIFA Club World Cup against Boca Juniors on December 16, scoring Milan’s third goal of the game in a 4–2 victory that allowed them to be crowned World Champions.

On December 17, Kaká was named the 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year, receiving 1,047 votes to Lionel Messi’s 504 and Cristiano Ronaldo’s 426.

Kaká was also named the 2007 Serie A Footballer of the Year in January 2008, winning the award for the second time in his career. On May 2, Time magazine named Kaká to the Time 100, a list of the world’s 100 most influential people, for his contributions both on and off the field. On October 14, he left his imprint on the sidewalk of fame at the Estádio do Maracana, in a section dedicated to the memory of the country’s greatest players. In 2009, he was named to the Time 100 list once more. Kaká finished the 2007–08 Serie A season with 15 goals and was appointed as a finalist for the FIFA World Player of the Year, finishing fourth, and was shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or, finishing eighth.

On June 3, 2009, it was observed that newly elected Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez had made an offer to buy Kaká from Milan for a reported €68.5 million, just two days after the player had left for international duty with Brazil.

Galliani told Gazzetta Dello Sport on June 4 that he was in talks with La Volpe for financial reasons: “We can’t let [Milan] lose €70 million… The reasons for Kaká’s resignation would be financial.” Kaká’s move to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium was confirmed on June 8 by Milan and Real Madrid in a six-year deal worth €67 million.

On August 5, 2010, Real Madrid declared that Kaká had undergone successful surgery for a long-standing left knee injury and would be out for up to four months.

Kaká was sidelined for a few weeks in March 2011 due to Iliotibial band syndrome. He scored two goals in a convincing win over Valencia after returning from injury.

On September 27, 2011, Kaká had one of his best games as a Real Madrid player in a 3–0 Champions League victory over Ajax, scoring one goal, providing one assist, and participating in one of the best team build-ups of the matchday: a counterattacking move involving Mesut zil, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema.

Real Madrid started the 2012–13 season by defeating rivals Barcelona in the 2012 Supercopa de Espaa. Kaká became the top Brazilian goalscorer in Champions League history on December 4, 2012, when he scored in a 4–1 win over Ajax.

Kaká conveyed his desire to leave Real Madrid on August 29, 2013, after scoring 29 goals and providing 32 assists in 120 appearances across all competitions in four seasons with the club. In an open letter on Twitter, he bid farewell to Real Madrid and its fans.

Milan revealed on 2 September 2013 that Kaká would join the club on a free transfer from Real Madrid, with only performance-related incentives owed to Madrid; after agreeing to personal terms, he signed a two-year contract.

After turning down proposals from former clubs So Paulo and Milan, Kaká revealed his retirement on December 17, 2017. He also stated his desire to work as a director, confirming that Milan had offered him a role.
