Ken Langone is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist best known for arranging funding for The Home Depot’s owners. He was born on September 16, 1935, in Roslyn Heights, New York, U.S. Currently, he is 85 years old. His father worked as a plumber, and his mother worked in a cafeteria. “A lot of caring, but not a lot of wealth,” has been said of Langone’s family. He attended Bucknell University and the Stern School of Business at New York University.
Kenneth G. Jr., Stephen, and Bruce Langone are his three children with his wife Elaine Langone.
Langone started his career in the early 1960s at R.W. Pressprich, a Wall Street financial services firm where he assisted in the development of new business. In 1968, Langone met with Ross Perot and convinced him to let Pressprich handle the IPO of Electronic Data Systems. Langone was elected president of Pressprich in 1969.
Langone founded Invented is a venture capital company, in 1974. Marcus and Blank were able to start Home Depot because of the funding provided by Langone. Langone’s most well-known corporate endeavor is now a national retailer of over 400,000 employees.
From 1999 to 2003, Langone served as chairman of the Compensation Committee of the New York Stock Exchange. In 2004, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer filed a lawsuit against former New York Stock Exchange Chairman Richard Grasso, demanding that he refund $100 million from his $139.5 million compensation packet to the NYSE. Langone was listed in the complaint as the person who accepted the pay plan. Given that the NYSE had prior knowledge of the board’s decision, Langone denied that the compensation packages were unconstitutional. The New York State Court of Appeals dismissed all charges against Grasso on July 1, 2008, because the NYSE had shifted its name from a nonprofit to a for-profit corporation, removing the Attorney General’s standing to prosecute him.
