Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Biography:

Kiran Mazumdar was born on 23 March 1953 to Gujarati’s parents in Pune, Maharashtra State. She was educated at Bangalore’s Bishop Cotton Girl High School, graduating in 1968. She then attended Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, a women’s college offering pre-university courses as a Bangalore University affiliate. She studied biology and zoology, graduating from Bangalore University with a degree in zoology in 1973. Mazumdar wanted to go to medical school but was unable to secure a scholarship.

Her father, Rasendra Mazumdar, was the head brewmaster of the United Breweries. He proposed that she study fermentation science and train as a brewmaster, a very non-traditional profession for women. Mazumdar went to Ballarat School, Melbourne University, Australia to study malting and brewing. In 1974, she was the first woman to be enrolled in the brewing class and topped her class. In 1975, she received a master’s degree.

She worked as a trainee brewer in Carlton and United Breweries, Melbourne, and as a trainee maltster in Barrett Brothers and Burston, Australia. She also worked for some time as a technical consultant at Jupiter Breweries Limited, Calcutta, and as a technical manager at Standard Maltings Corporation, Baroda, from 1975 to 1977. However, when she investigated the possibility of advancing her career in Bangalore or Delhi, she was told that she could not be hired as a master brewer in India because “It’s a man’s work.” She started looking abroad for opportunities and was offered a position in Scotland.

Career:

Ambitious by birth, Kiran saw no future in India as a master brewer, unlike her aunt. She was about to move to Scotland to work as a master brewer.

Destiny had come knocking on Kiran’s life in Leslie Auchincloss’s face. Founder of Biocon Biochemicals Limited of Cork, Ireland Leslie Auchincloss was looking for an Indian entrepreneur to help his company create an Indian subsidiary. Biocon Biochemicals Limited provided enzymes for the brewing, food packaging, and textile industries.

It was the beginning of the uncertain journey of Kiran. Kiran gave up the work of Scotland to accept Auchincloss’s conditional-attached bid. The role of the brewmaster would be assured if she did not wish to continue after six months. Six months have never come and, instead of giving Kiran a master brewer’s job, Auchincloss has trained her to be a manager at Biocon Biochemicals Limited in Ireland.

Having mastered the business model, Kiran was back in India to set up a branch. In 1978, Kiran set up Biocon India with just INR 10,000/-as her seed capital. She was working from her garage in Bangalore. The joint venture between Auchincloss Company and Kiran Mazumdar started operations in India.

Kiran Mazumdar

It was uncharted territory for the young Kiran. Funding was a big concern because it had an untested business model in India. She was fortunate enough to meet a banker at a social function who decided to finance her project. Hiring workers was her second biggest concern.

Her first employee was a former garage mechanic. Not the one to give up too easily, Kiran set up her first factory in a 3,000 sq ft workshop. The technical obstacles to the development of a biotech company in India have been enormous. With poor infrastructures such as unreliable power supply, unavailability of sterile laboratories, superior water quality, imported testing equipment, and unavailability of trained staff in India, Kiran has become a daunting job.

Kiran’s initial activities involved the extraction of papain and isinglass. Papain is an enzyme that digests proteins from unripe papaya fruit and is used to tenderize the beef. Isinglass is derived from tropical catfish and is used for the clarification of beer.
Within its first year, Kiran was able to export enzymes produced by Biocon India to the United States and Europe. Her Company was the first Indian Company to make this credit possible. Confident of the future, Kiran bought a 20-acre plot with her earnings.

Expansion Begins:

From an industrial enzyme producer to a completely integrated biopharmaceutical company, with a well-balanced drug range and a research emphasis on diabetes, oncology, and autoimmune diseases, Kiran Mazumdar has brought her business to new heights.

In early 1984, Kiran set up a research and development department at Biocon. The key focus of the R&D team was the discovery of novel enzymes and the development of novel techniques for the fermentation of solid substrates.

In 1987, Narayanan Vaghul of ICICI Ventures funded the development of a US$ 250,000 venture capital fund for Biocon India. The money was used to further improve Biocon India’s R&D activities. Inspired by Japanese techniques, a new plant was developed with proprietary solid substrate fermentation technology based on a semi-automated tray culture process.

Biocon India received US support for proprietary technology in 1989. This was the first Indian biotech venture. In 1990, Kiran established Biocon Biopharmaceuticals Private Limited is a joint venture with the Cuban Center for Molecular Immunology. BBLP has started the production and marketing of a select range of biotherapeutics.

In 1989, Unilever purchased Biocon Biochemicals from Leslie Auchincloss, Ireland. Biocon India’s relationship with Unilever helped to develop global best practices and quality systems. In 1997, Unilever sold its specialty chemical division, including Biocon, to Imperial Chemical Industries.

In 1994, Kiran set up a subsidiary of Biocon India – Syngene. Syngene provided early research and development support services on a contractual basis. Clinigene was founded in the year 2000. Clinigene concentrated on clinical research trials and the development of both generic and novel medicines. Clinigene was combined with Syngene at a later stage.

Matrimony Leads to Independence:

In 1998, Kiran Mazumdar married John Shaw, a Scottish man. John personally raised $2 million for Kiran to buy the outstanding 30 percent stake in Biocon from ICI – Imperial Chemical Industries. After resigning from Madura Coats, John Shaw joined Biocon. In 2001, Shaw became Deputy Chairman of Biocon India.

In 2004, Mazumdar-Shaw received advice from Narayana Murthy to list Biocon on the stock market. Biocon became the first biotechnological company to issue an IPO in India. The credibility of the Company saw the IPO oversubscribing 33 times, with a market cap of $1.11 billion, on its first day. On the first day of the listing, Biocon became the only second Indian Firm to have crossed the $1 billion mark.
