As a fullback for Syracuse University, Csonka earned All-American status due to his reputation for brute force. Affirmation of this sort was well-deserved on his part. When the Dolphins selected him eighth overall in the 1968 NFL Draft, they put him straight into the starting lineup. Even in the outset, he was noticeable. Subsequently, he had three straight years (1971–1973) in which he rushed for over 1,000 yards, and in 1972, he was an integral part of the Dolphins’ perfect season, in which they went 16-0.

After spending the 1975 season with the World Football League, which collapsed the following year, Csonka returned to the NFL and played for the New York Giants from 1976 to 1978. His final season as a player was 1979 for the Miami Dolphins, and it was also his last. In 1987, Csonka received recognition for his efforts by being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

There was not a single dissenting vote when Csonka’s teammates at Syracuse voted to make him an All-American. So, in 1968, the Miami Dolphins picked him with the first overall choice. He was an integral part of the Dolphins’ championship teams in 1971, 1972, and 1973. For the three years, he finished with over 1,000 yards rushing each time, with his best year coming in 1972 when Miami were unbeaten and he finished with 1,117 yards rushing. Each of those three years, he rushed for over a thousand yards.

Csonka received All-Pro accolades in 1971, 1972, and 1973 in addition to his four AII-AFC awards. Plus, he was chosen for five straight Pro Bowls, but unfortunately had to miss two of those games due to injury. It is generally agreed that he played at his highest level in Super Bowl VIII, where he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

The fact that he only lost the ball 21 times over the course of 11 seasons attests to his incredible steadiness with the ball. His 68 touchdowns led to 408 points for his team. It was surprising to some in the professional football industry when, in 1974, Csonka decided to play out his contract with Miami by exercising his option and then go on with the World Football League’s Memphis Southmen. On December 25, 1946, Csonka entered the world in the small Ohio town of Stow. The 873 yards he ran for were his most since 1973, and his total of 13 touchdowns and 12 touchdowns on the ground were were personal bests. His 12 running touchdowns were also a new personal best.

When he was a member of the dominant Miami Dolphins, his name became a household word, and his nickname, ZONK, became a new American verb because of how quickly and effectively he ran through the other team’s defense. The Dolphins were quite successful during his time there, garnering several awards.

He and halfback Jim Kiick earned the nickname “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” during the 1972 season. As of that year, they had adopted the appellation in question. The Dolphins’ perfect season was largely due to the efforts of these two players. Csonka was awarded MVP honors after the Dolphins’ triumph in Super Bowl VIII over the Minnesota Vikings (MVP).
