Lin-Manuel Miranda (born January 16, 1980, in New York, New York, United States of America), is an American actor, composer, lyricist, and playwright who has produced and starred in theatrical productions that fuse new musical styles with traditional musical theatre. Hamilton, a hip-hop musical on Alexander Hamilton, is perhaps his most well-known work.

Miranda was born in northern Manhattan to parents of Puerto Rican ancestry. She grew up in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. His father served as a political consultant to a number of New York City mayors, while his mother was a psychotherapist. Salsa and show tunes pervaded his boyhood home. Miranda attended his first Broadway musical, Les Misérables when he was seven years old, and it left an indelible mark on him.

His tastes also extended to hip-hop and R&B, and he developed into an accomplished rapper. He landed the lead role in W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance during his senior year of high school and became a staple in the school’s drama program. He met Stephen Sondheim, who eventually became a mentor to Miranda, as well as fellow musical-theatre legend John Kander, during this time.

Miranda continued to perform in musicals and develop his own songs and performances while attending Wesleyan University. He wrote the initial draught of the musical In the Heights there, which was situated in Washington Heights, a northern Manhattan neighborhood reminiscent of his own youth.

Miranda graduated from Wesleyan University in 2002 and immediately began her acting career, working in films and on television. He has performed in New York City and at festivals, notably the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with a hip-hop improv ensemble called Freestyle Love Supreme.

Freestyle Love Supreme, an improv show, made its Broadway debut in 2019–20. He continued to build In the Heights with fellow Wesleyan alumnus Thomas Kail. The musical fused hip-hop and salsa (with Miranda providing music and lyrics) and had a text by Quiara Alegra Hudes. It premiered Off-Broadway in February 2007 and lasted through July 2007, starring Miranda; it received two Drama Desk Awards.

In the Heights premiered on Broadway in March 2008 and was nominated for four Tony Awards, including best musical and best original score. Additionally, the production was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for drama and won the 2008 Grammy Award for best musical show album with its original cast. Miranda appeared in a brief role in a film adaptation of the musical that was released in 2021.

Miranda began writing a musical about Alexander Hamilton after reading Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of the Founding Father. Miranda found a typical American story in Hamilton’s life—who came from humble beginnings on the small Caribbean island of Nevis to become a famous US statesman and the country’s first secretary of the treasury. The resulting Hamilton was vivacious and effervescent, with a multicultural cast led by Miranda in the lead role.

The musical premiered Off-Broadway in January 2015 at New York City’s Public Theater, where its enormous popularity resulted in an early July transfer to Broadway. Hamilton won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2016 and got an unprecedented 16 Tony nominations that year, with Miranda receiving many awards, including for best actor in a leading role in a musical. The production ultimately won 11 Tony Awards, just one short of the record. Hamilton won the award for best musical, while Miranda took home the award for outstanding book and original score. He made his final appearance on the show in July 2016.

The next year, the musical was a critical and commercial success in London’s West End. The play was nominated for seven Olivier Awards, including best new play. Additionally, Miranda received the award for exceptional achievement in music. He earned a special Kennedy Center Honor in 2018 as one of the creators of Hamilton for creating a work that defies categorization.

In 2019, he reprised the title role for a temporary run in Puerto Rico to benefit the Flamboyan Arts Fund, a nonprofit organization he formed in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria (2017) to assure arts funding. Throughout his career, he was an advocate for Puerto Rico’s interests. In 2020, television will broadcast a videotaped performance of Hamilton.

Miranda later contributed to the music for Disney’s animated feature Moana (2016), for which he received his first Academy Award nomination for the song “How Far I’ll Go.” He took on the role of lamplighter and companion to the eponymous nanny in the 2018 musical Mary Poppins Returns. Miranda then starred in the television adaptation of Philip Pullman’s best-selling fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials (2019–).
