Lucas is the stage name of Wong Yuk-hei. He is a Thai and Chinese-born Hong Kong rapper, singer, and model. He is a member of the South Korean boy group NCT, as well as its Chinese sub-unit WayV and rotational sub-unit NCT U and the supergroup SuperM. In China, he was a regular cast member of the famous variety show Keep Running’s seventh and ninth seasons.

Lucas was born in Sha Tin, Hong Kong, on January 25, 1999, to a Chinese father of Teochew ancestry and a Thai mother. He has one younger brother and attended Tung Wah Group of Hospitals’ Yow Kam Yuen College.

Lucas worked at his parents’ Thai restaurant in Hong Kong. He would also go to Thailand at least once a year to rest and visit his mother’s family.

Career:

2015–2017: Pre-debut

Lucas was scouted by SM Entertainment, a South Korean entertainment agency, in 2015 after passing a Global Audition in Hong Kong. Lucas was hired after just one modeling audition.  Lucas received training in singing, rapping, and dancing as an SM trainee. On 5 April 2017, he was introduced as a member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut training team comprised of young trainees who could potentially debut as members of idol groups. Lucas made an appearance in NCT member Ten’s “Dream In A Dream” music video on April 7, 2017. Lucas, who is Cantonese by birth, studied Korean and Mandarin in preparation for his debut.

2018–2019: Debut with NCT, WayV, SuperM, and solo activities

NCT 2018, a project group for the massive boy group NCT, was unveiled by SM Entertainment in January 2018. Lucas, Kun, and Jungwoo were the newest members of the group. On January 30, 2018, the trio was introduced in SM’s NCT 2018 Yearbook #1. Lucas made his official debut with NCT on March 14th, with their debut studio album NCT 2018 Empathy. Lucas contributed three songs to the album as part of the NCT U sub-unit, including the title track “Boss,” “Yesterday” (also as NCT U), and “Black on Black” (as NCT 2018). Lucas appeared as a regular cast member on Korean variety shows Real Man 300 and Law of the Jungle in the Last Indian Ocean to promote the album.


Lucas appeared on Taeyeon’s song “All Night Long,” which appeared on her EP Something New, which was released in June 2018. On the Gaon Digital Chart, the song hit number 72. Lucas released the digital single “Coffee Break” for SM Station 3 in November 2018, co-written with Jonah Nilsson and featuring Richard Bona.

Lucas was declared a member of NCT’s China-based unit WayV, managed by Label V, in December 2018. The seven-member unit officially debuted on 17 January 2019 with their debut single album The Vision. Its lead single “Regular” was a Mandarin remake of NCT 127’s “Regular.” The following month, Lucas was cast as a regular in the seventh season of the Chinese variety show Keep Running.

Lucas was revealed as a member of SuperM, a K-pop “supergroup” formed by SM Entertainment in collaboration with Capitol Records, on August 7, 2019. Promotions for the group started in October and are targeted at the American market. SuperM’s self-titled debut EP, which included the lead single “Jopping,” was released on October 4, 2019. Lucas performed his first concert with SuperM on October 5 at the Capitol Records Building in Los Angeles, kicking off a world tour that included stops in North America as well as planned stops in Europe and Asia.

2020–present: NCT 2020, Kick Back, and solo activities

Lucas will perform with NCT for the first time since “Black On Black” in 2018 in October 2020. He took part in the second all-members project, NCT 2020, which included all 23 members. He appeared on NCT U’s album Resonance Pt. 1 for the song “Make A Wish (Birthday Song)” and its English version, “Faded In My Last Song,” and “Volcano,” as well as WayV’s “Nectar.” He also took part in the all-members single “Resonance.”

WayV released their third EP, Kick Back, on March 10, 2021, along with the lead single of the same name. The album debuted at number one on the Gaon Album Chart, marking the group’s first number one album.

For the ninth season of Keep Running, Lucas returned as a regular cast member.
