Marla Gibbs is an American actress, singer, comedian, writer, and television producer whose career spans seven decades. She was born Margaret Bradley on June 14, 1931, in the United States of America. Gibbs gained widespread recognition for her performance as Florence Johnston, George Jefferson’s maid, in the CBS comedy The Jeffersons (1975–1985). For this role, she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series five times.
Gibbs also appeared in the program’s spinoff, which aired in 1981, and in the NBC comedy 227, which ran from 1985 through 1990. After some time had passed, Gibbs moved back to her hometown of Detroit, Michigan, and enrolled at Peters Business School there. Gibbs moved to Los Angeles in 1963 to recover from an ulcer and started working as a bookings agent for United Airlines shortly after his arrival. Before landing her first acting gig in the early 1970s in the blaxploitation films Sweet Jesus, Preacher Man, and Black Belt Jones, she began her career as an actress by performing in black theater in her hometown of Los Angeles.
She was cast as Florence Johnston, the Jefferson family’s maid, in the CBS comedy series The Jeffersons in 1975. Gibbs kept her job as a reservations agent for United Airlines while working as an actress for CBS during the first two years of her contract with the network. She would begin her day in the CBS television studio, where she was employed, and then go to United Airlines, where she was used on the night shift.CBS recommended that she took a leave of absence from her employment at United Airlines when the series became an established hit, and she complied with their request.
