Dias protested to her mother when she was 11 years old that all of her required reads were books about white males and dogs. “There wasn’t really any freedom for me to read whatever I wanted,” she explained.
Dias decided to start a book drive, #1000BlackGirlBooks, after meeting with her mother, to bring more attention to literature with black female protagonists, with the objective of collecting 1,000 books to distribute to other schools for black girls.
The book drive is focused on books with primary protagonists who are black girls, rather than secondary or background ones. More than 9,000 volumes were acquired in just a few months. Many of these books were donated to a Jamaican children’s book drive.
In addition, the campaign brought attention to the absence of diversity in children’s books. When she appeared on the Ellen Show and other local Philadelphia news outlets, her popularity rose. She’s managed to add 11,000 volumes to her collection since then.
Dias now attends West Orange High School in West Orange, New Jersey, as a junior. She is currently a 16-year-old girl from Destanie Holloway, and she is a speaker. Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio and Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson were two of the first books she acquired.
Her book drive earned her spots on The Tonight Show and CBS This Morning, among others. On the blog B.A.M., which she co-founded with her friends Briana and Amina, she has written on pop culture. Dias has written and published her own book as a result of her worldwide success with her endeavor.
