Mouni Roy was born to a Bengali family in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, on September 28, 1985. Shekhar Chandra Roy, her grandfather, was a well-known Jatra theatre performer. Her mother Mukti was a theatre artist, and her father Anil Roy worked for the Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad as an office superintendent.
She attended the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Baburhat, Cooch Behar, until she completed her education and then moved to Delhi. On her parents’ insistence, she enrolled in Jamia Milia Islamia’s mass communication program, but dropped out halfway through and moved to Mumbai to try her luck in the Bollywood film industry. She completed her part 1 exams and then did not return to Delhi. In Run, she danced as a background dancer in the song Nahi Hona (2004).
