He also appointed as Minister of State in the Ministry of Shipping and later in the Ministry of Railways. He was correlated with the All India Trinamool Congress and the Indian National Congress. Roy was selected National Vice-President of the Bharatiya Janata Party on 26 September 2020.
After Mamata Banerjee decided to resign as the Minister of Railways to become Chief Minister of West Bengal, Roy was handed over additional charges to the Ministry of Railways after Mamata expressed her wish that her party would retain the Ministry of Railways and privately suggested Roy to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
He resigned from the Trinamool Congress on 25 September 2017; he was later suspended for six years as a party for anti-party activities. He also resigned as a member of the Rajya Sabha on 11 October 2017.
Roy began his political career as the leader of the Youth Congress and became close to Mamata Banerjee, who was also a member of the Youth Congress.
Roy was a founder member of the All India Trinamool Congress, formed in January 1998 as a breakaway faction of the Indian National Congress led by Mamata Banerjee. He soon became a party’s face in New Delhi and became Secretary-General in 2006.
In the 2001 election of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, he was a TMC candidate from the Jagatdal electoral district and came in second with 56,741.
In April 2006, Roy elected to Rajya Sabha as leader of the All India Trinamool Congress from 28 May 2009 to 20 March 2012 in Rajya Sabha. In UPA II was first appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Shipping, then Minister of State in the Ministry of Railways when Mamata Banerjee resigned.
On 11 July 2011, when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh directed Mukul Roy to visit the Guwahati-Puri Express derailment site in Assam, he openly challenged him. This caused a lot of displeasure among the political circles, and on 12 July 2011, he was removed from the Railways portfolio in the latest cabinet reshuffle.
In 2012, he was the subject of a disagreement over the railway budget. This happened after Mamata Banerjee expressed her dissatisfaction with the increase in passenger fares and demanded the resignation of Dinesh Trivedi, the railway minister.
After Dinesh resigned, Mukul became Indian Railway Minister, and he removed too much criticism from the fare hike introduced by former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi. With the departure of Trinamool from the UPA coalition due to a 51% FDI share in the retail and aviation sectors, Mukul Roy’s tenure as Minister of Railways came to an end in September 2012.
Roy ran a special train called “DU Gyan Uday Express” a Bengali statement that took 1000 students from Delhi University to places like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Goa, and Bangalore during the summer break of 2012.
An application for the establishment of a new political party called the Nationalist Trinamool Congress Party was submitted to the Election Commission and Mukul Assistant Amitabha Majumdar was appointed as President. The party’s headquarters are located in Dinhata, North Bengal.
Roy and Mamata had a decline in 2015 when his name came up in the Saradha scam as well as in the Narada sting operation in which TMC leaders were involved.
Roy was expelled from the party for six years when senior BJP leaders such as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and BJP Secretary-General Kailash Vijayvargiya met. He resigned from the Trinamool Congress on 25 September 2017. Roy also resigned from membership of Rajya Sabha on 11 October 2017.
