Nongthombam Biren Singh is a politician from India, as well as a former footballer and journalist. He is currently the Chief Minister of Manipur.
He started his career as a footballer and was recruited by the Border Security Force (BSF), where he played for its team in domestic competitions. He left the BSF and went into journalism. Despite having no formal education or experience, he founded the vernacular daily Naharolgi Thoudang in 1992 and served as its editor until 2001.
Singh entered politics in 2002, joining the Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party and winning the Heingang assembly elections. He won the seat back in 2007 on an Indian National Congress ticket after joining the party in 2003. He was the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports before leaving the party in 2016 to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2017, he was re-elected to his seat in Heingang and named Chief Minister after his party won the Coalition and formed the government.
N. Biren Singh was named a Champions of Change in 2018 for his outstanding service to the nation. The award was presented by India’s Vice President, Sri Venkaiah Naidu, at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.

N. Biren Singh was born on 1 January 1961, Imphal. His birth sign is Capricorn. His father’s name is N. Khunjao Singh.
Career:
In 2002, he was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly as the Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party (DRPP) candidate in the Heingang constituency. He later became a member of the Indian National Congress (INC).
He was selected Minister of State for Vigilance in the Manipur state government in May 2003.
In 2007, he was re-elected to the Assembly on behalf of the Indian National Congress (INC). He was later selected as the State Government’s Minister of Irrigation and Flood Control, as well as Youth Affairs and Sports. In 2012, he was re-elected to the Assembly for the third time in a row.
Biren asserted in September 2015 that the recently passed indigenous peoples bill in the Manipur Legislative Assembly would not injure any community in the state.
Biren decided to quit the Manipur Legislative Assembly and the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in October 2016, following a revolt against Okram Ibobi Singh, the then Chief Minister of Manipur.
Singh officially joined the BJP on October 17, 2016, and later became the Spokesperson and Co-convener of the BJP Manipur Pradesh Election Management Committee. He was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from the Heingang Assembly Constituency in 2017.
In March 2017, he was elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party in Manipur, and after presenting a majority of MLAs to the Governor, he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Manipur on March 15, 2017. He is Manipur’s first BJP Chief Minister.
In January 2018, he lays the groundwork for Manipur Public School’s new academic building. Manipur Minorities and OBC Economic Development Society are working on the project (MOBEDS). The project, funded by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, is expected to cost Rs 10.80 crore and will include new classrooms, a headmaster’s room, common rooms, a library, laboratories, toilets, and separate hostels for boys and girls.
Singh initiated the First State-Level Ginger Festival on April 20, 2018, in Parbung, Pherzawl District. The festival will be remembered as one of Singh’s legacies in promoting agriculture in the hill district, which is one of the poorest in the state. Farmers have observed that they have been able to sell their organic ginger all year since 2018.
During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in India, Manipur became the third state to prove itself coronavirus-free after two positive patients recovered from the virus.
On June 17, 2020, nine MLAs who supported N. Biren Singh led the government in Manipur revolted against him and withdrew their support from his government, blaming him for the lack of action during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He was one of eight MLAs who missed the assembly proceedings during the vote of confidence, defying the party whip. In the presence of Ram Madhav, Baijayant Panda, and Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, all members of the Indian National Congress resigned and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
