2011-2015: Pre-debut

After seeing TVXQ on TV in 2011, he decided he wanted to challenge himself and become an idol, so he went to a bookstore and applied to multiple auditions, despite having no background in singing or dancing. On December 24, 2013, he was introduced as a member of the SM Rookies, a pre-debut idol training team.

In 2015, he was the Japanese representative on the show Abnormal Summit, which featured a panel of non-Korean men living in South Korea debating Korean culture. He expressed his views on a variety of issues, including the negative effects of gender roles and his support for transgender people, but was forced to leave the show in order to focus on his debut.

He was also the only trainee to compete in ISAC twice in a row in 2015 and 2016, as well as the one to win NCT’s first medal in 2016. He played for the football team and won gold, demonstrating his ability as a soccer player.
