Navjot Singh Sidhu is an Indian leader, television personality and former cricketer. He was the Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Sources of the State of Punjab. He is currently The Cabinet Minister Of Punjab and The Member of Legislative Assembly(MLA). He also served as the Minister of Culture interests, Tourism, and Museums of the State of Punjab.
He had a career connecting over 19 years after his first-class debut in 1981–82 as a professional cricketer. After defeating his place in the national team following his international debut in 1983–84, he returned to score four half-centuries in the 1987 World Cup. Sidhu went on to play in 51 Tests and 136 One Day Internationals for his country playing mostly as a top-order batsman. He came to be recognized for his six-hitting ability and earned the sobriquet “Sixer Sidhu”.
He turned to commentary and television most noticeably as a judge of comedy shows after retirement. He was a permanent guest in Comedy Nights with Kapil (2013–2015) and later The Kapil Sharma Show (2016–2019). He was a contestant in the reality television show Bigg Boss (2012). He was also seen in the show Kyaa Hoga Nimmo Kaa.
Sidhu involved the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2004. He contested the general election from Amritsar. He triumphed the election and held the seat till 2014. He was approved to the Rajya Sabha in 2016 from Punjab before he resigned from the position the same year and departing the party. He joined the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Amritsar East in 2017.
Early life and biography:
Sidhu was born on 20 October 1963 in Patiala, Punjab, India. He belongs to a Jatt Sikh Family. Sardar Bhagwant Singh was his father. He was a decent cricket player. He had done his schooling from Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. He studied in Mumbai at HR College of Commerce and Economics. He was elected to the Lok Sabha as a member from Amritsar in 2004 on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. Later he resigned following his conviction in 2006. He successfully contested the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat after the Supreme Court stayed his conviction. He is also the current president of the World Jat Aryan Authority.
He is married to Navjot Kaur Sidhu. She is a doctor and a former member of Punjab Legislative Assembly. The couple has two children. Their daughter’s name is Rabia and her son name is Karan.
Commentator and television career:
Sidhu initiated his career as a sportscaster in 2001. He was esteemed for his one-liners as a commentator, which came to be known as “Sidhuisms”.He was registered up for commentary on Ten Sports. He also appeared as an expert on various Indian news channels. He initiated to work again for ESPN Star Sports in 2012. He was a member of the team that commentated for Sony during the 2014 period of the Indian Premier Organization. This led to a conflict with Star India who supposed that Sidhu had breached his ₹22.5 crore contract with them by working for their competitor and sought a repayment.
He also appeared as a judge on the television program The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. He was a contestant on the reality show Bigg Boss 6, and had to make an exit from the program on account of political grounds in 2012.
Sidhu made an appearance in the 2004 Hindi film Mujhse Shaadi Karogi as a commentator during a cricket match. He appeared in a pivotal role alongside singer Harbhajan Mann in the 2008 Punjabi language film Mera Pind. His most latest film appearance came in 2015 in ABCD 2.
