Paul Mason is a British pundit and radio presenter. He was born on January 23, 1960, in the United Kingdom. Before becoming the Economics Editor for Channel 4 News on June 1, 2014, he served as the Culture and Digital Editor for Channel 4 News. Prior to that, he was the Economics Editor for BBC Two’s Newsnight program. He has written several publications and is now working as a visiting professor at the University of Wolverhampton. Mason had his primary education at St. Joseph’s RC Primary School in Leigh and his secondary education at Thornleigh Salesian College in Bolton. When Mason attended Thornleigh Salesian College in the 1970s, it was a grammar school.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in music and politics from the University of Sheffield in 1981 and completing his training to become a music teacher at the London University Institute of Education, he continued his education by conducting postgraduate research at the University of Sheffield into the music of the Second Viennese School until the year 1984.
During the years 1982–1988, Mason was based in Leicester, where he held positions as a music educator and a professor in music at Loughborough University. Since 1988, Mason has called London home. Between 1995 and 2001, he was employed at Reed Business Information, a branch of Reed Elsevier, where he contributed to publications such as Contract Journal, Community Care, and Computer Weekly, where he served as the deputy editor.

In recognition of his contributions to postcapitalism, Paul was awarded the Ellen Meiksins Wood Prize in 2018.
In appreciation of his contributions to the development of humanist Marxism, the Erich Fromm Prize was bestowed upon him in 2020. In March of 2018, it was disclosed that Mason had been a member of the Facebook group known as “Palestine Live,” a platform for spreading antisemitic content. He said that although he was a member of the group, he was added to it in 2014 without his knowledge by someone else and that he does not read or support the content of all of the Facebook groups he is a member of. This was in response to comments made by Labour leadership candidate Rebecca Long-Bailey on abortion during a meeting with representatives of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford.
Later, he said, “I went to a Catholic grammar school in the 1970s, taught by ultra-violent priests, and spent my early years in the Labour Party fighting the anti-abortionists on exactly this issue.” He said this about the controversy surrounding his educational background. He praised Marxist humanism inspired by Marx’s Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 in general and the thought of Raya Dunayevskaya in particular for its emphasis on overcoming alienation from labor to achieve individual freedom. On the other hand, he criticized the authoritarianism of Stalinism and the structural Marxism of people like Louis Althusser. In a different piece published in the New Statesman the following year, he referred to himself as an “actual Marxist.” However, he criticized determinist readings of Marx that propose Marxism as a “theory of everything.”
After many resignations from his cabinet and a challenge to his leadership in June 2016, Mason voiced his support for Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour Party. In an article that he wrote for The Guardian, he said, “But one thing I do know: Corbyn is incapable of lying to the British people; he is inured to elite politics; he didn’t spend his entire life in a Machiavellian project to gain power and an invitation to Oleg Deripaska’s yacht.” He was referring to the fact that Jeremy Corbyn would never intentionally deceive the British public.

In an article published in June 2018 in the magazine New Statesman, Mason made a case for the state to suppress “fascists.” He stated that he supported a policy of employing “the full panoply of security measures to deter and monitor” those individuals he called “racists.” He also stated, “For clarity, unlike many on the left, that means I am in favor of state suppression of fascist groups.”In his piece’s last paragraph, he said, “The progressive half of Britain needs a narrative to overcome this threat: a narrative based on shared, historical values of democracy and tolerance.” He also stated that “[to] stop pandering to right-wing nationalism and xenophobia and start fighting it” is something that should be done.

In a podcast published by The Spectator in May 2022, Mason said that in the wake of the Beergate COVID-19 regulatory violation charges, he backed Keir Starmer for the position of Labour leader and believed he would be the best candidate. During the same month, Mason was selected to be on the longlist for the role of Labour candidate for the safe seat of Stretford and Urmston in Greater Manchester.
