Josep “Pep” Guardiola Sala is a Spanish professional football manager and former player who is now the manager of Manchester City in the Premier League. He is widely regarded as one of the best managers of all time, having won the most straight league games in La Liga, the Bundesliga, and the Premier League.

Johan Cruyff regarded him as one of the best midfielders of his generation. Guardiola was a highly creative, hardworking, nimble, and elegant player with good anticipation, tactical awareness, and the ability to read the game; he played as a center or defensive midfielder in front of his team’s back-line throughout his career.

Pep Guardiola Biography:

Pep Guardiola was born in Santpedor, Spain, to builder Valenti and housewife Dolors on January 18, 1971. He was the youngest of three siblings, having two older sisters and a younger brother. He is not a religious individual. When Guardiola was 18 years old, he met his wife. On May 29, 2014, they married. Their three children are Maria, Màrius, and Valentina.

He was a football addict before joining the ‘Barcelona’ youth club and played whenever he had the opportunity. His passion for the game led him to work as a ball boy at local games. At the age of 13, he was accepted into the ‘Barcelona’ youth academy, and his formal training began. He began his professional football career as a defender, and he spent the following six years honing his skills in the hopes of making the first squad.

Johan Cruyff, the head coach of the young squad, grew fond of Pep and promoted him to the first team in 1990 when Pep was 19 years old. This was only the beginning of one of the world’s most illustrious player–club associations. Guardiola studied German for four to five hours a day to prepare for his role as Bayern Munich manager. Guardiola is a supporter of Catalonia’s political independence.

In 2015, he confirmed that he would run in the regional parliamentary election for the pro-independence alliance Junts pel S.Dolors Guardiola, Guardiola’s mother, died on April 6, 2020, in a Barcelona hospital with COVID-19 complications.

Guardiola appreciates and knows how to appreciate a work of art! Following his departure from Barcelona, he spent much of his sabbatical in New York, primarily at the city’s art galleries. Guardiola exclusively does press conferences and post-match interviews with journalists, not one-on-one interviews. However, he makes an exception for anyone writing a biography of him.

Pep is a ball of anxiety 24 hours before any game, so tense and focused that he loses his appetite. He does, however, rehydrate himself with numerous bottles of water.

Career:

Pep Guardiola

Pep’s first official season with ‘Barcelona’ was 1991–1992, and it didn’t take him long to establish himself as one of the essential members of what became known as “the dream team.” In 1991 and 1992, ‘Barcelona’ won the ‘La Liga’ and the ‘Euro Cup.’ In an article about the club’s winning streak in the Italian sports magazine “Guerin Sportivo,” Pep was singled out.

In October 1992, he made his senior debut in a ‘World Cup’ qualifier. In the same year, he led the Spanish team to Olympic gold and was awarded the ‘Bravo Award,’ which is presented to the best player under the age of 21 in the globe. He played for his country in the 1994 ‘World Cup,’ where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals.He was not picked for the 1998 “World Cup” due to an injury.

‘Barcelona’ won the ‘La Liga’ in 1993 and 1994, and reached the ‘UEFA Champions League final when they were defeated by ‘Milan.’ The majority of “the dream team” had been replaced by new players by 1996. Pep was named captain of the team in 1997, however, he missed the majority of the 1997–1998 season due to injuries.

Many European clubs approached ‘Barcelona’ in 1998 with hefty offers to move Pep, but ‘Barcelona’ was not ready to let him go yet. Instead, they prolonged his stay with the squad until 2001 by signing a new contract with him. When Pep returned to the team as captain in the 1998–1999 season, he led them to a ‘La Liga’ win.

Pep joined the ‘Serie A’ team ‘Brescia’ in 2001 before being transferred to ‘Roma.’ Pep’s form in Italy was tainted, and he was accused of taking illegal medications. His brilliant career as a professional football player appeared to be coming to an end. Before formally retiring from the game in 2006, he appeared in seven matches for ‘Catalonia.’ After that, he went to Mexico to learn how to be a manager.

He was named the coach of the ‘Barcelona B’ club in June 2007. He was promoted as head coach of the first team for the 2008–2009 season. Pep began his coaching career in the third qualifying round of the ‘Champions League’ the following year. Barcelona went on a 20-match winning streak under his leadership, maintaining their lead in the ‘La Liga’ standings.

Pep guaranteed his team’s triumph in the ‘League’ final and the ‘Copa del Rey’ in his first season as coach of ‘Barcelona.’ Pep’s first season with Barcelona finished with a Champions League final victory over Manchester United. Following this triumph, ‘Barcelona’ became the first Spanish club to win the treble, i.e., the European Club title, the domestic cup, and the league title, all in the same year.

Pep was also the youngest coach to lead a team to the Champions League title in the game’s history. In 2009, Pep helped ‘Barcelona’ win the ‘FIFA Club World Championships’ for the first time in the club’s history. The calendar year 2009 was a particularly good one for ‘Barcelona,’ as the club won nine titles. Pep had coached 100 games by February 2010, and his sparkling win-loss ratio of 71:10 won him the title of a best football coach in the world.
