India Against Corruption Movement:

Following coverage in the Indian media, a number of high-profile scams related to the UPA government, including the Commonwealth Games scam, the 2G Spectrum Scam, and the Adarsh Housing Society scam, became public in 2010. It sparked a strong anti-corruption crusade, demanding the establishment of Lokpal, a body with the authority to arrest and charge even high-level government officials accused of corruption. The movement was dubbed India Against Corruption movement.

Prashant Bhushan became an active participant in this movement. In March 2012, he and a few other crusaders, accompanied by the crusader’s chief, Anna Hazare, went to the PMO’s office for a meeting. Following that, Hazare formed a joint committee to draft the final version of the Jan Lokpal Bill. Prashant Bhushan rose to prominence as a member of Team Anna after Hazare appointed him to the drafting committee. Several meetings between the committee and the government were held to discuss the proposed bill.

According to Prashant Bhushan, Lokpal should be an independent body with the authority to arrest and prosecute all public servants. The UPA government presented a draft Lokpal Bill in June 2011, which excluded Team Anna’s key proposals. The government introduced its version of the Lokpal Bill in the Lok Sabha on August 4, 2011. Prashant Bhushan and other members of the IAC criticized the bill, claiming it was weak and would protect corrupt public servants. Anna Hazare staged a hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to put pressure on the government to create and enforce strict Lokpal laws.

After numerous failed negotiations with government representatives, Team Anna activists such as Prashant Bhushan, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Yogendra Yadav entered politics in order to pass the bill themselves.

Entry and Eviction from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP):

Despite the fact that Prashant Bhushan is the son of a former Law Minister of India, he remained out of politics until 2012, after which he willingly decided to join politics. After the 2011 Anti-Corruption Protests failed to produce the desired results, Prashant made this decision. He believed that all of the current political parties were corrupt and that a new political party was required. On October 2, 2012, he and a group of Team Anna members formed the Aam Aadmi Party and named Arvind Kejriwal as its president.

Prashant Bhushan accused Arvind Kejriwal of deviating from the core ideologies on which the Aam Aadmi Party was founded ahead of the 2015 Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections. He chastised him for arbitrarily choosing MLA candidates with a questionable reputation in order to win the elections. He also submitted a list of 12 AAP-nominated candidates with a tainted history. On 20 April 2015, a national disciplinary committee of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) expelled Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, and two others from the AAP.

Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, Anand Kumar, and Ajit Jha were kicked out of the party by the party’s national disciplinary committee. “They were ejected for gross indiscipline, anti-party activities, and violations of the party’s code of conduct,” explained party spokesperson Deepak Bajpai. Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav both denied the accusations that led to their dismissal. Following their eviction from the Aam Aadmi Party, Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav founded the Swaraj Abhiyan, a new socio-political organization.
