is an American paediatrician and philanthropist, who is more popularly known as the wife of Facebook co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. Along with her husband Zuckerberg, she formed the ‘Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’, an organisation that aims to promote human potential as well as promote equality in areas such as health and education. Chan, who was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, met Zuckerberg while both were students at Harvard University. They became friends after that. After her graduation, she attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. After four years of study, she received her medical degree and began her career as a paediatrician. Chan, along with her husband, has pledged around $1.6 billion to charities. They have also handed away granted 18 million Facebook shares to the ‘Silicon Valley Community Foundation’. When the Chronicle of Philanthropy published a list of the 50 most generous American philanthropists in 2013, the couple topped the list. She was also recently nominated for ‘The San Francisco Chronicle’s third annual Visionary of the Year’ award.
Priscilla Chan initially worked as a science teacher at the Harker School in San Jose, California. The year 2008 marked the beginning of her medical school education, which she finished in 2012. She got married to Mark Zuckerberg the same year, on May 19th, only one day after Facebook’s stock market opening.
Priscilla and her husband have donated around $1.6 billion to charitable organisations. They donated $ 75 million to San Francisco General Hospital where Chan worked for some time. In 2015, the pair formed the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative which had an investment of up to $1 billion in Facebook shares. Despite the fact that the organisation exists to promote the well-being of the human population, it is not a charity trust.
